Best Ampeg 810?

Got it stripped and added a few screws to the bottom caster plate. Looked like that caught a corner on something over the years, just wanted to reinforce it. The osb was in really good shape for being a 92.

This was what I used. It was a kit from autozone for $60. Came with everything. I used the roller mostly it came out a little rough textured ( some of the other brands might be smoother). The brush lays it down smoother though. I did 1 good coat and used a little less that half a gallon (the kit comes with a full gallon. I took a few more pics but for some reason my phone locked up and didn't save them. I'll take some more this week n post them. It came out pretty good I think ,but I'm not all too picky about it.

Using that product was easy. I did it at my shop. It's a water based coating so it wasn't stinky. It was thick enough to hide small children and animals so covering sings, dents, chips, etc is no problem. I layed the cab on its front on a couple of 4x4's and did the back n sides. Once that dried I flipped it over and finished the front edges. You can also touch up this product at any time if you want as well. So far so good.

I never used this stuff before and cleanup when wet was very easy. ONCE its DRY is a very different story. You better want it on what ever it is because it ain't giving it back!

Over all this was very basic if you can paint a wall , you can do this. I cleaned and vacumed the speakers wile I was there, and also pulled one for numbers. They are the dark speakers . But it sounds pretty good as it is.

Thanks for the run through! This actually sounds like a great solution for my 810. It's bare wood and seems to have been painted black several years ago. I don't want to take any more chunks out than it's lost in the last 39 years anyway.

I started the bass roll off thread the other day. I also have a "dark" 810. This method works great with this cabinet. Before I started doing this I generally found the 810 really loves a good bump @800 on the head,up to about 3:00 on the knob. It might sound a little weird to your ear but it slices a stage to shreds.

Yeah I read that and it worked pretty well. I still gotta play with it some more but it sounds good. Actually it sounds fantastic solo. My guitarists play Marshall's and actually leave all their tone controls centered lol. That's a first for me so im trying to find space around and under the kick as well in the 600-800 Hz range , which is where the Spector growl lives any way. Everyone is totally in love with it but me lol, needs a little more tweaking.


I was going to set it up for the best Mic'd tone and leave it there. I would just bring my own Mic to gigs, at least that way I know exactly what's going to the foh. Any suggestions?

Thanks ! I think 2 coats brushed would get close to that, theirs is more uniform though. They make the stuff I used in a spray can too. I really think its the way to go for anything that's going to see some abuse.

Yeah that was really my train of though. I figured if I re-tolex'd it, it would look good but its not gonna help keep the 20 year old cab together lol.
I think this should hold up pretty good. That bedliner was on my boat when I got it (bass boat, no carpet) its brutal stuff, and held up to the elements well including salt water. Far more than a cab would be subject to. I decided to go back to carpet in my boat. That stuff does not come off! I knocked the high spots down a little with a few quick passes with the sander. I carpeted right over it with contact cement with great results 2 years now with no lifting, etc.

Bought from retailer in 2005-2006.

Can anyone tell me anything about these? How old and so on...
I'm thinking about selling one of them, and ofc want to sell the least valuable one

I'm biased but as the owner of two SVT Squarebacks I will say they are clearly the best of the bunch. My two cabs have the original CTS 32 Ohm drivers in them. Both have their original dollies too.

I've played one show with them paired with my blue line original SVT and it was simply eargasmic. Most times that SVT Full Stack is too much for the shows I play but there are shows when it's called for.

Take the time to hunt down a true "fridge"...you will be happy you did. I found one of mine in central Oklahoma and the other in Cleveland.

Correct. And sell the 05 IMHO. The 05 was made with OSB while the 07 cab was made with plywood, plus the 07 cab is brighter sounding. The Vietnamese factory put out a lot of non-working heads, but the cabs were stellar.

And while macinator is absolutely right about the CTS loaded flatback cabs of the early 70's, they also handle only about 250w, so there's a tradeoff with them. Doesn't bother me since I never turn up that loud anyway, but for those looking to crank an SVT hard, not the best cab to get.

They are the same cab. The issue on them is the date. The old 70' s square back "fridge" is generally considered the best. 96-06 were the "dark" years that most don't like. They were made with OSB instead of all plywood. Still a good cab though. The newer 06-present LOUD era cabs are well liked around here also. The new heritage line is said to sound a little different than the others, more like the square back 70's

I'm shopping for an 8x10 myself this week. I have a vintage and a dark era to try out myself.

I have one of the "Dark Era" cabs. I love it. I have a Ric and an RBI and the bassiness of the cab compliments the mid heavy thing I have going on very well. Absolutely love that thing.

BTW, the dark years for Ampeg 810's is actually 2000-2006. However, almost all Ampeg cabs made between the early 90's and 2006 were made with OSB.

Actually, I see a lot of those old OSB cabs still in use, so they can't be ALL bad...unless you puncture it. Then it's all bad But ya, Duratex or similar wouldn't be a bad idea. Wouldn't do it to a cab with the tolex still in good shape, but would to a beaten-up one.

I agree. Mine was sans tolex, so I had to do something. Spray on bedliner is cheap and fast.
