best and worst things about shows with moshing

Love-Nothing...its pointless
Hate-How people think they're hardcore, just because they flail their arms around, thats not tought...thats just being a ******** octopus. Also, how people are complete dicks about it, they kick you around and call you a pussy if you say it hurt...just headbang to the beat, much more fun and less dangerous.

Havn't been in many have you? Im not a big dude, I remember going down once hard and gett stomped by some dude (Think it was a accident) Two huge guys picked me up, tossed me onto the crowd and i was surfed out the front where I could have rececived medical attention if i was hurt...

One time for mastodon i didn't want to mosh just get close to the front. I met some giant muscle bound dude who was watching for surfers so his girlfriend didn't get squashed. I threw a pound, he excepeted. Rest of the mastodon set he kept people from falling on my head, i made sure no one came near his girlfriend... The bonds we create in a pit are the point, plus exerting some energy, getting out a little agression (But in a positive way)I find theirs two kind of pits, pits with old school moshers (Murphys, molly, bad Rel, Lamb of God, etc) and the hard core fighting kids (Kataklysm etc( Is that music? or just 1 blast beat skipping constantly...) Couldn't think of any others... But i know my sister's generation is filled with D-Bags... The shows blow, no moving around, just kids swinging at invisible enemies.

I spent about 15 years in the pit. For the last 10 years or so, I have been more worried about breaking my glasses or blowing out my knee to really get in there. The Woodstock '99 generation seemed to beget way too many sloppy, inappropriate bro-dude push pits for me. An old-school circle pit is where it's at.... you can show off your moves AND it generates a nice breeze to cool everyone off!

Also: it should go without saying that groping ladies in the pit is a no-no. Groping ladies anywhere is a no-no.

"Moves"... really? looks like a bunch of flailing to me, I wouldn't call them "Moves"......

Best: moshing can be fun and whatnot

Worst: 3 things

1. Was in an ozzfest pit where a guy was spinning around with his leg out and he caught me hard in the gut.... I promptly dropped him.

2. Played a "hardcore"(read: deathcore/metalcore) show in CT and the kids were doing that flipping fighting inivisble people and acting badass. Almost got into a huge fight cuz one of them almost put his feet thru our drummers kit.

3. Coheed and Cambria show in RI last summer, security wasn't paying attention to the crawd surfers coming towards them and some chick got dropped from about 6 or 7 feet up right onto her head.

The best pits are usually filled with older dudes who know the 'rules' and watch out for everybody.

A worst for me is being crushed against the front barrier when I just want to watch the band. Or some dude hitting me for not participating. Usually I just try to get off to the side somewhere.

I'm too old for that crap but on the plus side, I'm 6' 5 and 280 pounds and can put up my own weight.

If you punch me or my wife, I will knock you out. I'm not talking about the simple getting bounced around in the pit. I'm talking about the douchebags that just start spinning with their fits flying no matter where in the crowd they are, if you do that I will discipline you. I did it to two scene kids last deftones show that hit my wife in the face, twice. Security at the venue never even spoke to me, they picked the douche-nozzels up and drug them out the door.

Worst: Breaking your nose when a flailing skinhead accidently head butts your face.

Worst: Some gigantor dude who is crowd surfing plants a Doc Martin center mast to your chest as he is coming down. (Do they still wear those?)

Worst: The smell of sweaty crust punks getting crustier.

In the famous words of Murtaugh... "Riggs, I'm getting too old for this sh**."

LOL!!! Have fun kids

I love moshpits, not much beats listening to your favorite metal band and getting the chance to kick some @$$.(not literally, there are rules and I never try to purposely hurt anyone)

Loves:
-Getting out some aggression
-The sense of camaraderie
-GIANT circle pits that take up the entire floor, a real sight to see
-Jumping in a pit for awhile, than jumping out and having a better spot to see the show from, like metal show freeways
-Getting acknowledged by your favorite band
-Getting in the frontline of a a W.o.D., not nearly as brutal as it looks. Again, in a good pit no one is trying to actually hurt each other.
-Meeting a chick in a pit. Sounds weird but I once met a chick in a Children of Bodom pit (read: a bunch of flailing doofuses) and too make a long story short, I ended up making out with a metal hottie while up front against the gate, dead center in front of one of my guitar heroes. I swear Alexi gave me a nod of approval! :D After the show ended I never saw her again...:(

Hates:
-Dumb@$$ kids who flail around and kick/punch people in the face/groin. Believe it or not, there IS a right and wrong way to mosh
-Big dudes who brick wall right in the middle, especially when you hit them off balance and get a big fat sweaty gut to the face
-People who have no business in a pit, i.e. extremely drunk tards, very small people you feel you have to avoid so you don't hurt them, chicks with boyfriends who get all p.o.ed when you touch their girl, etc etc.
-Large poles on the floor. Awhile back when I saw Cannibal Corpse at Slims in San Francisco (THAT was a mosh pit, I'll tell you what!) the venue had about 2 or 3 floor to ceiling poles, I guess for structural reasons, and you constantly had to be aware of where they were at all times, especially if you like all your teeth in your head
-When you get to the point of extreme exhaustion (about to throw up, pass out, etc etc) and are trying to get the hell out of the pit and all the @$$holes around the pit won't let you out and push you back in.:mad::mad: this is seriously one of the things I hate most and can really make me wanna crack someone in the face.

So.... what you are saying is: Mastodon, Tool and Mudvayne don't have pits/moshing..... I'm just too old to act that stupid I guess, if you wanna hurt yourself... by all means go ahead..... I just left a "Metal" band six months ago.... also do you ever listen to music outside of the genre you play? well I do and alot of others do as well.....

^this is exactly what I'm talking about, I am 6' 3" and weigh in about 270.... so yeah, hit me or my wife and see what happens.....:scowl:

I guess we're all just a bunch of uncivilized beasts then, good sir.

Influences are not the same as "Music I like". I used to pit alot back in my metal & punk days of young adulthood. Ive been in all kinda of pits, and generally find punk pits the most enjoyable, especially when youre around a bunch of old schoolers. I grew out of that phase years ago, though, after having to take out more than a few douchebags.

Thrash and punk pits are my favorite too, since I started as a converted punker. Punk pits don't tend to have as many of the uber macho d-bags and are more geared to just skanking in circles and a bit of pushing around. Never seen anyone windmill in a punk pit either.

Did my first real moshing at Metallica at Bonnaroo 2008. Great crowd, people helped each other. No one was punching or anything, I didn't want to do it at all, but the pit kept getting bigger and bigger until I was on the edge of it. I believe it was right then they hit the first chords of Master of Puppets, I screamed and went for it. Got knocked down alot, but got picked right back up and asked if i was okay, then kept going. It was really a great experience.

No, it was more like guy comes in punching as hard as he can at eye level while spinning; hits my wife in the eye. I turn and put my left hand on his shoulder and then my right hand connects square with the left side of his face. He knees turn to jell-o and he falls down. Security picks him up and drags him out.

The other kid; his little buddy, not noticing that his friend just got laid out; starts doing the exact same thing. He hits me in the face and kicks my wife in the side and lands a glancing blow on her cheek. He basically did a "mosh-girl" right at us and ended up hitting both of us; needless to say I lost it for a second. Full force right cross to the back of the head ---> Falls face first into the ground. I go to help him back up and about that time securities standing right there. I think they are going to throw us both out instead he throws the kid on his shoulder and takes him out. Never said a word to me.

I do feel bad for striking kids half my size and quite a bit younger. You have to understand though, they caused physical injury to my wife. My wife had a shoe sized bruise on her side and a pretty bad shiner. My wife is a meek and mousey women that would never hurt a living thing. I love her dearly. Furthermore, we were nowhere near the center moshing area; so it's not like we walked into this.
