Best bass for me? (Smoothness, clear)

No idea. You really need to try different things yourself.
A Geddy Lee Jazz may be easy to play for some due to the skinny neck, a Fender P may sound "smooth", A passive American Jazz bass may have a clean sound. A person that doesn't like fenders would have COMPLETELY different answers.
Too many variables.... price range, what amp are you using, etc.

For me - Ken Lawrence Brase 5... for you, who knows! Hunt for a good one for you, not what works for someone else.
That being said, more info will result in some good suggestions (and some VERY pitiful ones!) from some good players. That should help you narrow your choices down.

Reguardless of price range - I would Get a fender P or J or PB&J - LOL - You will never be disapointed with these basses - They are so vers. and they look F- in cool man!!
If you have to Get a Squire , but I would stay within Fender-ish.

FWIW, everyone always says MTD's are really clear and crisp sounding. I have played a few of the import ones and have been impressed with their sound! I haven't had the priviledge to try out a USA MTD.

Yeah I'd vote MTD , but since I'm not a rich guy , Ibanez . I have an MTD ,foreign made , Kingston ,and like it, but my BTB's trump it ,for what I do .

Go to your local GC, and try them all out - see what you like. All you'll get here are everyones personal prefs ... like Ibanez SR series.
The best bass for you is the one that feels the best to you. Its not something that anyone here can answer. We can all give suggestions based on our own personal tastes but its not something we can answer. All I can say is don't ignore any brand you run across, try them all out. From Peavey to Fender to Yamaha to Dean to Ibanez, Try them all.

You can ask 12 different bassplayers to describe what a smooth tone is, and get twelve different answers that are only slightly related. Tone is both personal and emotional, so you will simply have to try lots of different basses and amps to find your tone. Not to minimize your question, but nobody can really give you an answer to it. The good thing is it justifies all those trips to different music shops to try out instruments.
