Best Bass for Metal?

The Nordstrands don't need an OD pedal.
I'm not sure about the OP, but I want a bass that sounds the way I want w/o any pedals, just straight into a good amp.
The less equipment to buy, the better, IMHO.
If you need to add a caveat every time you recommend a Bartolini, maybe it's time to stop recommending them

The only thing I'd probably get would be a Chromatic tuner pedal and a compressor pedal. Maybe a distortion if the bass amp didn't already have it. I know some of the Acoustic practice amps have overdrive.The Nordstrands don't need an OD pedal.

My Ibanez ATK can do everything from Tool to Pantera to Candlemass. It looks vintage, but don't let its image fool you.
Go for the 35" scale on MTD... The ibanez it's fine but the massive low B on the 35" is more agressive ... And when the rest of the band start to turn up the distortion an double kickdrum you going to need that extra weight on your bass
Which bridge do you mean? the monorail design bridge? or the standard bridges they use?
I'm talking about the monorail design, separate bridge for each string.
Good to know. Yeah see not all the higher end models are great. I know I could change the bridge out but no thanks. With that kind of money they should get it right right out of the box. I'm settling on Ibanez though and will probably get the SR500 or SR670. Just deciding between bartolini humbucker or nord p/j pickup. I kind of like the frequency switch on the SR500. I switched it over while at Guitar Center and really liked the sound.
So I've never played on a mtd before but I've played on multiple ibanez models. I find that I didn't care for the feel of the neck and it wasn't giving me the edgy tones that I like. I have heard some Michael Tobias basses that sound tremendous. If you can find a nice used one give it a try. I found no better sounds out of a brand new sr1000 costing a grand than I did on a sr400 costing about $350. The neck on the mtd will be slightly different and thinner on the top as compared to the bottom of the neck. If you are OK with the feel it would be a bad ass bass that should give you lots of great sounds. Definitely more complex tonally which is a bonus for metal because it makes you cut through the crazy going on. Guys like Alex Webster can always be heard and he was an swr guy which was known to have a clean sound and he would let his fingers, the active pre in his spector bass, and some pedals give him some extra tone and grit. He's using Aguilar now but his tone is very similar. I find that clarity and overtones are so underrated even in heavy music. Good luck!
They are great basses for the money. Just make sure to invest in a better bridge right out of the box. Other people may find it otherwise but it really bothered me so I felt I should let you know about it.
I could live with it in general but it really killed it for me when I realized that most of the metal rings on the end of the string (can't recall the actual name for that) don't fit in the cavity of the bridge (it is not the classical bridge where you only put the string through the bridge and straight wind it around the tuner), making for a very limited string choice. Elixirs which came stock with the bass fit right up while I couldn't do so with Daddarios, Ernie Balls, Dean Markleys and others. For a moment I thought about widening the cavities with a sanding paper or something similar but then decided it wasn't worth my time.
I've had Ernie Ball, D'Addario, and Dean Markley's Blue Steel on my Premium Ibanez Soundgear, with the Mono-Rail IV saddles, w/o any issues.

What's weird is the BTB is more expensive due to neck thru and being 35 scale instead of 34. Does that matter to you guys at all?
Ah scratch that..they messed up and failed to list it as dual coil. Got to be careful lot of these retailers don't list the correct details..

The BH2 in the BTB740 & SR670 are the same pickups.
The neck is thicker & wider on the BTB & overall it's going to be heavier.
The bonus of the BTB is that it comes with Stainless Steel frets, which will last virtually forever.

P/j nord on talman tmb600 is good...or try sr premium with big single nordstrand....and if money isnt your concern...buy d roc hellboy limited edition from dingwall....(i never tried droc before....my bass is sr1400 mlg from ibanez)
actually what kind of metal you wanna play ? Nu metal sometime uses slap technique....
but if you need fast slim neck....buy ibby....choose punchy pickup.....or dark (depend on what subgenre metal you use and what band that inspire you)
look at their bassist....tone is in your finger...but you also cant deny the price of your pickup's contribution for your playing....or if you wanna save some of your money...just find trusted luthier and consult to him/her what kind of bsses that suits on you

As said, Almost anything can work for metal. Some work better. Bart's for what you said you want will be Adequate but you'll probably find it lacking after the honeymoon.
Here are three of mine that I use (I play more than just metal) for metal. The Stingray (on left) plays the best for me but the SR1305e (center) comes very close (difference is more 4 vs. 5 string) and I can do a little more with the Ibanez sound-wise. The Ibanez neck I have not adjusted since I first bought it over 2 years ago even tho I've brought it on tour, all sorts of weather. I have adjusted the Stingray a few times. of course the Ibanez was more than the Stingray. There is a used SR1300 (4 string version of mine) in Great condition on GC for $700 right now. I've been considering it for myself. i called and its almost mint. Sound, build quality, sustain, neck stability, versatility, weight make my SR1305 my favorite bass & what I go to for almost all types of music. And I love the bridge. No issues.

I swear it didn't fit on mine, yes I could somehow fit them in but they wouldn't slide nice and deep in there the way Elixirs would.
I hold the ball-end into the socket with the tip of a Phillips screwdriver when I finish winding the strings onto the capstan, so they don't slide out.
I tried many options including the screwdriver and it wouldn't work. But, what are the chances the bridges were different on these? Perhaps they were. Perhaps they were not. I know for sure I couldn't fit the strings in for I recall spending loads of time trying to slide them in and they always ended being too big.
For the reference, mine was an SR1006 2013 IIRC (or something close).
