Best bass for my needs under $2600?

In talks with Rob C. about doing some work on either a custom bass or converting a Ric into a 5-string. I was able to get my hands on one today from a friend and it felt pretty good, I didn't have any problems with it at all. I think it should turn out well if that is the path I choose to go. though there are still a few things to decide on before anything is finalised.

Do that and you will not only hate the bass you will hate yourself for what you did to a perfectly good Ric. The neck will not stand the added tension and the string spacing will be so tight it will be virtually unplayable. Only way to do it is re-neck the bass and toss all the electronics and hardware. You would be starting with a bare body which is just a chunk of wood, not a Rickenbacker.

There are 5 string Ric's out there, you want a 5 string Ric, get a 5 string Ric, don't start a failed project. They are fairly rare, but not impossible to find, Mr. Google is your friend.

Why not do a custom Warmoth Gecko? You pretty much get to choose whatever wood combination you want, whatever pickup routing you want, you can choose your own pickups and preamps. If you are at all handy with a screwdriver and soldering iron, should be fine.
