The weird thing about the P is that it sounds okay by itself... but sounds GREAT in the mix. So, i'd really try and borrow one for a band practice to see how awesome it really is.

I guess you could buy a new one with a good return policy in case you don't like it...
The cool thing about P basses is that you can get a less expensive one and still have a good sounding bass. An SX P or a Squier CV/VM P bass with a good set-up will last you a looooong time, and could make a good moding platform later on if you want to 'upgrade'.
In regards to my past weekend experience, there was hardly (if any) discernable difference between the tone of the guys with Squiers, and the guys with Fenders when coupled with Marshall loving guitarists.
What, only one Rickenbacker!?The best punk bass tone I've ever heard was from Paul Grey, of The Damned (circa 1981). He used a blue Ric 4001 into (I think) a Marshall stack, with heavy-handed pick action and the sound was like exploding glass
! Anyone who's ever heard the intro to "Billy Bad Breaks" will know what I'm talking about 
.Still, I'm English, so I'm bound to favour the punk bands from this side of the pond

Im starting to see more and more eastwood hi flyers down here. Ive seen two or three in the past couple of months, and its really surprising.
i miss kent, ohio in the 90's saw dan electros, ricks, gibsons, polytones, voxes, peaveys, steinbergers, and etc. a pretty diverse selection of basses, but of course you could buy a player bass for between 200 and 400 quite easily then, the gretsch electromatic seems to be the bass of choice among economically challenged people for post punk/noise now, i guess we'll see if they'll make a longscale version or a midlevel one someday
Haha, i know about 3 or 4 females that play Rics, and none of them are 'big' ladies by any means, quite petite actually.
While there were no Eastwood bass players... there were a few Eastwood guitars (Kepi Ghoulie's lime green eastwood was AWESEOME). I like them a lot!
I will say, that while the P's ruled the day, and all-in-all, basses that WEREN'T P's kinda just stood out because they were different.
@mpdd: a Gretsch Electromatic G2202 is WAY up on my current GAS list. I don't even mind that it's a short scale, they sound awesome for their price point.
Haha, honestly, i haven't given LTJ much thought since high school, when i saw them on tour with Hot Water Music!... but the when, this past weekend, they played the ENTIRE Loosing Streak album front to back (then 40 minutes of other songs), i had a ton of fun and nostalgic-overdoses! Haha i skanked for the first time in probably a decade!
Kepi's set though... EASILY in the top 2 or 3 for the entire weekend. He even played an amazing last minute acoustic set on one of the side stages!
