Best bass for slap?

MusicMan Stingrays are great slap basses, especially if you choose a double humbucker (HH) version. Then you have FIVE great slap sounds before you even start thinking about EQ...Can't go wrong with a Jazz bass (at least not with the Marcus Miller sig) either.

I compared Freddie's P-bass tone to a video found next to it with another bass player doing the same bass line using a Jazz bass with the neck pick up only. The Jazz just can't quite get the classic P tone (and visa versa).

I had the same experience going from a P bass to a Jazz back in the 70's. For some grooves, I really missed the P-bass.

Yo Jim - I agree - you can't do a P sound on a J bass and you can't do a J sound on a P bass. They are both classic and beloved designs/sounds. I say get both and love the experience of having two great sounds. Of course then there is the lean mean Stingray sound....and the.......well you get the picture..

The Marcus Miller formula: Ash-bodied bass, with a J-bass pickup config (both pickups on or close to full-on), maple fretboard, roundwound strings, and a good active preamp.

THE PERFECT RECIPE!!!!

My '75 Jazz (Natural in color,ash body,white p/g,white binding),Badass bridge,along with my OLD trusty Sadowsky clip-on pre-amp?? It just doesn't get any better,IMO:D.

I played a 1989 Fender P-bass plus that I slapped so much I had to have re-fretted... it worked great (particularly once I got rid of those lace-sensor pickups...)

My current 4 string is a lakland 4-94 standard which plays and sounds so good it makes me weep - particularly for slap.

I'm in the market for a 5 string that slaps well (my Zon does not - strings are too narrow) - and I'm seriously considering a Carvin SB5000.... Why not a Lakland? 35" scale. I want to stick to 34" for all my basses.

in my opinion, warwick is the way to go for slapping. it just sounds right.

I got me a $$ and it's the only bass I own that I don't slap on. I ALWAYS hit the open poles and get this nasty click. I've changed my angle of attack and the attack itself but nothing.

The closest I can get to a decent slap on it is if I use a modified version of Entwistle's typewriter technique.

However, my Schecter Elite Custom 4 is hands down my favorite bass for slap ever. Ever. Even unplugged it sounds bad-ass slapping and popping away. My Squier Jazz and Dean Edge1 5 both sound good, but the Schecter is my favorite by far.
