Best bass to modify

Hello everyone, I play bass for a couple months.
I have a Squier V. M. Jazz Bass, and I would like to try a p-bass, but I dont wanna spend too much money. So, I wondered to buy a low price bass and then change its pick ups.
What u recommend me to do ? I dont wanna spend too much money, like 200-250€. I know I cant get a very good thing with this money, but even so, I would like to try.
I am asking for a low price bass with good wood and well made. And opinion about pick-ups too. Are Dimarzio DP122CR good ?

if you like your squire jazz, why not get a squire P?

and it's probably the easiest to mod, tons of after market parts for it.

and well, they just look cool (and I don't even own a fender/squire) :)

Try a few basses in a shop, especially P's. The neck is different, you mightn't find it comfy (give it a chance though). I second the VM P vote. You can get replacement parts for P & J clones fairly cheaply, and some of them are very much loved... I am planning at some point to replace the pickups in my PJ with a set of DiMarzios or Basslines (Seymore Duncan) as they seem popular choices.
Bartolini, Fender, EMG, and a few other smaller pickup manufacturers all have a few pickups you could try, some swear by a certain brand / model.

P.S. Some have said the VM stock Pickups are pretty good. I wouldn't be surprised if I swapped pickups only to swap them back (less likely in my case 'cause my bass is a very budget model - around €100 new)

This is how I feel about the DD pickups on both my VM J and VM P. I will never swap them out, I like them just fine.

I modded the crap out of a Affinity. I changed everything except the body, neck, tuners, and bridge. I aggree with rodl2005 about the BA bridge. That's a lot of money for no noticeable difference in tone. Spend your $$$ on an ashtray instead.

No experience with DP122CR, but I put Fralins on mine. The stock pup was pretty good, I just wanted Fralins. There are, so many good ones that I think the answer is going to be yes on most that you ask about, because "pretty good" is a personal preference.
