I would cheerfully murder repeatedly to get that Mockingbird! Stunningly beautiful and quintessentially Eighties. Great bass.

I had one of those that I bought in 83 except was the one that was painted in burst. I loved it but I had to sell it to buy my kid special glasses he needed. Priorities, you know. I had just gotten out of the military and definitely not rolling in dough at that point in my life...actually, I have never rolled in dough, bread dough or otherwise.
Here is my favourite 80s bass from my own collection. This is my Aria SB1000, which I bought about 6 months ago.
Here's my '83 contribution. I believe early '83 was the only time frame for this particular transitional combo of features.
Old headstock shape
Solid maple bi-cut neck construction.
Black krinkle hardware.
Serial number on the neck plate.

Fantastic looking bass in amazing condition. Definitely on my GAS list. I've been really into white basses lately. Got a buddy with a Red one that I've claimed if he ever sells.
I was born in 1980, but after looking at this thread...I'm glad I didn't start playing bass until 1989. lol
Nearly all the killer bass builders were in full swing in 1983, too much great stuff.
Honestly, a Fender from 83 would not be on my radar at all, there was better stuff out there.

I though 1983 models were already with 'eye-gouger' headstocks.
But yeah, you never know what went down the assembly line.
If 1983 were a BYB for me: first and foremost, a Wal.

Fodera
Smith
Aria SB and RB series
Ibanez Musician
Rickenbacker
Veillette
G&L
would all be basses I'd put ahead of an 83 Fender.
A medium scale E series '83 MIJ Squier P Bass just popped up locally, may have to go check it out.
1983? The first bass that comes to mind for me is Sting's Brooklyn-era Spector NS2.
