I would recommend a used Fender MIM Jazz. I have seen these for sale on ebay and craigslist for $350-$450. I absolutly love mine. Great tone. One dimensional but gets the job done.
I also own a Warwick Streamer Stage I and had a Schecter Stilleto 5. My warwick, while loyal to me for 7 years, has been collecting dust for 8 months. Because of the style ive been playing lately, the fender is my go to bass.

I like my MIM Jazz also and I think $350 would be a decent deal. They can be found for less however if you're patient.
I love my Stiletto 5. Great feel, great tone, versatile, lightweight, inexpensive. To me, there is nothing not to like. Got mine for less than $300.

Hmm... good idea, but there probably wouldn't be a big amount of members if it was just a Prophecy club, maybe Heartfield/Fender owners club?
I always wanted a DR, but at the time they were just a little out of my price range, and now I'm just too cheap. Love my Foundations though.
Look on Ebay for Wishbasses... They come up from time to time for about $250-280 (although most are fretless)
I popped by the local GC earlier today to pick up some strings, so I took the opportunity to noodle around with a few basses while I was there.
I am continually and consistently impressed with the quality of the Squier CV series. All of them are really nice basses, and the CV 50's P bass almost came home with me. Maybe next time...
I also liked the Ibanez SR300, although I'm not sure I can get past the 2+2 headstock and angled tuners. Nice neck, though.
Bottom line: there are plenty of basses at your price point that will serve you well.

I agree there is a bass at everyone's price. I just bought a newer Kay bass as a switch from a P-bass just to play something different then fender all the time. The kay pick-up is junk but at 120.00 + a pickup...it's pretty good to take to the dive bar gigs.

That video is the reason I bought one (secondhand but as new) and I am so glad I did. They also make a 4 string version. Also the Ibanez SR range is really excellent.

I agree the Squires are great for the money. The Rogue LX405 is a great 5 string for a little over 200. I have 3 and love them

+1 on Carvin (my LB75 is awesome for the price)
+1 on Squier (though I like the VM's better than the CV's)

The quality of basses coming out under $350 anymore is phenomenal. It used to be difficult to find a playable instrument under $500 back just a few years ago.

I have to cast my vote for the Squier Vintage Modified 70's Jazz Bass. Hands down, it is the best $299 I have ever spent on a bass. I couldn't believe it wasn't a Fender when I first played it. As has been said previously, it's got that 70's tone and IMO is a bass that can be used for almost any kind of music. I restrung it with Ernie Ball Hybrids and it is my go to bass for most of my music.
I also have a Douglas WOB826 and an SX SJB-62 from Rondo Music, which has great values on basses. Their products are worth more than they ask for them.

Bought a used Robin Freedom bass for $300 in great shape. Good playinga bass and sound. 80's with original hardshell case.

+1 on douglas basses. I own one for a hard rock band that I've joined. everyone in that band nicknamed my douglas bass "dougie" mainly because of the brand name.
Peavey millennium basses would be a good choice. I own a peavey millennium bxp 4-string bass and it sounded pretty cool. I've purchased one for my brother's band and i was amazed by the sound quality. I'm planning on purchasing a 5-string version for my band real soon. another good choice for affordable bass guitars would be arbor basses. I own an arbor musicman clone and it sounded pretty cool. it sounds just as awesome as the real deal and it goes easy on my budget. even though it's a passive musicman clone, it's a great sounding bass.
