as for recent bassists... I've been listening to a lot of pino.... and cachao is pretty sweet too...

entwhistle is still right up there though

Why?

Every one of the players in the poll has a body of ensemble work that stands out to some of those who bother to listen to their ensemble playing as much as their solo work, whether they're "mainly known for it" or not. Marcus doesn't have bass-only albums- he has albums that feature his playing and/or his music in an ensemble context.

The thread is crap and cannot ever be used to reach any sort of agreement, but if you wanted to evaluate a tuba player, well, you would, in fact, expect him to have some technical proficiency that goes beyond OOMPAH. This is no damn different.

haha it seems to me you've listed the worse bassiste ever!!!

well, just kidding, anyway, none of the listed i think are even close to be the best... maybe Jaco steps are not far from the top, but i don't enjoy his playing that much (100% subjetive)

I would say Alain Caron fits my taste in bass, maybe his versatility, cleanness and fretless tecnique are the things i admire more from his playing. Of course i love his music too.

Flea makes the list yet AC doesn't.

I've been a fan of Caron since I heard Penny Arcade, his approach to "sound" is simple extraordinary, his chops are wicked, his writing is creative and can include incredible melodies. There is a melodic part in the solo of "I Believe It" that give me goosebumps every single time I hear it (trust me, you'll know it when you hear it.)

No vote from me because I because the only recording I think I possess of all the artists is Heavy Weather, which is not bad, but not something I regularly listen to. It is all art - completely subjective.
