best bassist?

Uff, Richard Bona is one of my favorite musicians ever.
Also a great one(still very young tho) is Esperanza Spalding, the girl is from another planet!

Among the best imo there are Scott Reeder and John Pattitucci, possibly also Flea :)
You know what I totally forgot about Esperanza Spalding , she's probably up there with Richard Bona in terms of musical capabilities on the bass.

He's amazing but he's not in contention for the best. Jaco and Hellborg and Meyer are in another league. It says nothing about Wood, but those guys are just beyond the beyond. It's like comparing Beethoven and Wagner.

But i did forget Stanley Clarke on upright. I saw him with Al Di meola and Jean luc ponty, and I have never seen anyone own an upright like that, as far as physical technique. I give Meyer the edge though because of the sheer beauty of his playing and tone.
I understand your point but am still not willing to grant it. Even if it is clear that one player is "better than" another with respect to some particular criterion, it's still an entirely subjective matter as to what criteria you choose to equate with "best." I usually don't even read these best-player threads, much less contribute to them, because of the apples-and-oranges problem -- and because I don't even like to think of it as a competition in the first place. I'm sure you agree -- at least, mostly.

And FWIW, I prefer Wagner to Beethoven.

Yeah of course, but the point of these stupid threads is to have fun arguing whos dad can beat up yours. And beethoven would jiu jitsu wagner.
