That Squier looks nice.
Sounds as good as it looks, feels solid also! It dosn't feel cheap like the MIM Fenders and some of the Squiers that I've played!
... or the first series of passive MTD Artist basses (MM style pickup). On eBay for under $400.
Or you could also try a Traben Chaos 5er. I picked mine up for $300, right before they raised the price to $400. But hey, still under 500.

I second the ATK, just sold my 305 only because i wanted a 4 string. It played and sounded great. I liked it so much i bought the 4 string version (300).

I bleepin' LOVE mine:
low action, slick fingerboard, great sound even on the B (IMO despite what some other reviews have said), and the active electronics helped me boost into the mix of my church's probably-misrun sound system. it really is a steal at $329 spankin' new. best bass i've ever owned & one of the best i've ever played. just downright FUN to play. cant say enough about this bass
Cant speak for your taste, but if I had $500 to spend on a 5 string, I would look at an Ibanez SR505. Should be availble used for $5 bills or less.
Definitely look at the Squier Active 5 Jazz. Its worthy and should be available at your local GC to check out and its well under your budget.
Somebody metioned Carvin. I heard good things about these but have never had one in my hands. Due to their mail order style of sales, its difficult get your hands on one to make a diecision as to whether its to your liking or not.
I also recommend the Lakland Skyline 55-01 or 55-02. They may be obtainable used within your budget but Im not sure. I got mine for under $600 two years ago.

Omen 5-string. I just got one a few nights ago and this monster is sexy not only to behold but to behear. Trying it at my local guitar center I had a hard time finding amps I couldn't distort with that B-string.
Theres a few Ibanez's 5'rs gettable in that price range new via internet store prices. Thatd be my pick for a fiver due to narrow necks and overall qaulity.
this thread made me gas for this peavey bxp 5 i was lookin at on ebay. so i just bought it. tiger eye top...399.99 shipped. theres another one for 399 on there if any one needs one
