"Schecter Omen Extreme-5" I have the 4 string model and its great for a under $500.00 bass.

G&L tribute 2500, for sure. Got one myself for 350 used (somehow) they are normally around 500 i think used.
Great thing about this G&l Tribute bass is that these has the same electronics in it that the G&L 2500 has, so...... Great electronics, Cheap bass

I remember the Epiphone Embassy got a pretty amazing review in Bass Player a while back, and they're dirt cheap.
New, it is the Squier Active Jazz Deluxe V, IMO. Used, any number of passes. I am really partial to MIA Peaveys.

I owned a Squier Affinity Jazz V that was a very nice bass. If you like the passive Jazz sound, that's a good one.

I own two and looking for a third (a sunburst) to complete the trifecta.
Best bang for the buck, I think.
This isn't normally under $550 or even $500 but, I got a ATK305 online from a place (prefer PM's) for $436.
Carvin basses........PERIOD!!! Man!! It's just hand's down,one of the world's mysteries as to why in H-E-L-L people don't mention these basses!! Keep it up guys!! That way,they'll keep goin' for birdy prices......Cheap,cheap!!
But.....I'll be damned if those basses don't deserve more credit.
