Best cable snake brand?

For metal or otherwise.

I'm looking for an 8-12 channel snake, preferably less than 50 foot, for recording in our band space. (The cable runs were a little out of hand the last time.) I'm looking at whirlwind and proco, but is there any others I should look at?

Just don't get the idea that you can save a bunch of money if you buy a big spool of cable and a bunch of connectors from Digi-Key and spend a week soldering. Been there, done that, saved about $20 on a $200 item (back in the day).

Whirlwind makes high quality snakes as does ProCo. You wouldn't make a bad choice with either. For considerably less cost I have also had great results with EWI snakes. I feel the value of EWI's products, in most use cases, is hard to match.

Oh trust me, I thought of that and promptly dismissed the idea. Even if I saved a lot of money, I don't think it's worth the time and tedium.

Okay, this is good to know. I asked my brother (he runs a studio and live sound professionally) and he recommended Whirlwind. I asked him about Hosa, and he said their stuff breaks (which tracks with a lot of what I read online.) I thought about going the modular route with a Planet Waves breakout box and a high quality DB25 to XLR, but I don't know how reliable the PW stuff is either.

At this point, I think a couple to a few hundred dollars (IE buy once cry once) is worth it to get a reliable, good quality snake.

While Pro-Co and Whirlwind are the best Coke/Pepsi go-to brands, there is also Hosa, but their lengths are usually shorter, meant for smaller studios, and are more of a prosumer quality.

I looked at Hosa (specifically the Lil Bro). However, my brother (who runs a studio and runs live sound professionally) told me to avoid Hosa because their stuff is more prone to breakage. I've read a few forum posts about that as well. So...I guess I was going more for "buy once, cry once" on this just to make sure I get durable stuff.
