Is there one compressor that is the 'hands down' best?

Sounds like you want a very transparent compressor.

On the higher end of things, the Maxon CP9+ is great. The Diamond also gets a lot of love around here, though I haven't tried one.

for transparent you need a demeter compulator. Use the search function though, there are oodles of threads on this with lots of good info.

I've got an Aphex Punch Factory optical compression pedal, which isn't bad. It's nothing like a nice studio tube compressor, but you can often find them used for $35-60 bucks in my area and it delivers plenty of bang for your buck. It takes a bit of tweaking to add subtle compression while preserving your tone, but it can be done. You can also get some cool synth-ish, ultra-sustained fat sounds out of it when the knobs are turned to extremes

If you do a search, you'll find nobody needs a compressor. Any shortcomings in the tone dept. are a result of poor technique. So there.

That being said, Bongo's review are spot-on. IIRC, the Behringer got top honors for tone and durability....NOT!

I like OS clones from the few comps I have tried and I'm sure some people will hate them. It's a personal choice really as much as OD and fuzz

That Demeter looks promising.

But I agree the compressor sticky does need exploration on my part.

may sound like a stereotype or oversimplification, and not trying to sound like a boutique snob


but the expensive shid rarely, if ever, qualifies as 'junk'

value for money is one thing (and may require research and 'search' function), but 'BEST' and 'TOP' usually come at a premium
