Best Effect for slaping??

hey guys, I want to buy a new effect, I already have and boss overdrive and a boss chorus, What effects do you recomend for slaping???

what about the aw-3??? or qtron?? MXR Micro Amp?? any reference?

Compressor.

Maybe. A compressor can make a player sound fairly good and professional pretty fast. However, it can really be a crutch for slapping, as well as many other techniques. It'll reign things in, especially if you toss a fast attack and release on the compressor, but it really can hinder good technique in the long run. As such, the player can sound that much worse in a back-lined situation, a jam or when the compressor breaks. If you get one, I suggest almost never practicing with it, and mostly using it just at gigs and such.

An Autowah/envelope filter is the next obvious thought. The EXH Bass Balls is a good one, but has a distinctive twin filter sound that may or may not work for the the player. I'm more familiar with some of the more higher end autowahs then stuff under $150 or so, so I'm probably not the best to ask advice. If you want to go boutique or higher end, then I suggest the Source Audio BEF.

All good and valid points. Just figured I would start with the most basic stuff. In my experience ( and this is just me) I think when properly used a compressor isn't necessarily a crutch, though I do agree that it can be, if you're lazy about technique. I see a filter being used to mask bad technique at least as often. I also own and recommend a BEF, if you are inclined to try an envelope filter, though mine no longer resides on my board.

You could always try a manual wah pedal.

The thing I personally don't like about using these pedals is standing on one foot for an entire song with a ten pound bass strapped to my shoulder. But they do sound awesome with slap, and I enjoy listening to others do it.

+1 on using an autowah. I use the EHX Enigma Q-Balls, and often slap through it.

Boss LMB-3. Just a touch of limiting with really bring out the slapping without acting like a "crutch." The enhance knob is essentially a mid-scoop eq, which is also perfect for slapping. Highly recommended.

Mutron III, phase shifter, delay (with tap tempo. Lots of fun in stereo!), looper, wah pedal. The only effects that don't work for me with slapping are the ones that make the sound squishier, like distortion or overdrive. Flanging can be cool, but is often hit or miss for my taste.
