There is no best, that's why I have three. MXR M82, Source Audio BEF and a Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk. None could substitue for another.

I voted for two if the three I own, but my real workhorse has been a Haz MuTron III+ pedal. I also voted for the Chunk Systems b/c I've tried one out a few different times and it is a great pedal with lots of range and extreme settings potential.

I read these polls, and always imagine the question being, "What's the best pair of pants?!"

There are so many variables with pants: type of activity, weather, material, body type, etc.

There are so many variables with EFs: type of music, active/passive, need/desire for sidechain input, etc.

I know my envelope filters (more than one) are the best for my uses. Accordingly, I'll say the best envelope filter for the rest of you is the envelope filter whose features best fit your needs at any given moment.

I never said best, I said favorite :)

I am liking the Source Audio the most right now...some others not mentioned:

The good ol' Digitech Bass Synth Wah...mostly known for it's synthyness, but the first setting does a pretty good filter. Also, the EHX Tube Zipper (tube model) does pretty good too, along with distortion/fuzz tones.

I wish I could take my vote back, I think it went for other since I didn't see the Groove Regulator 2 or the SA BEF Pro, which would have been my choices, though I guess the distinction between the BEF and BEF Pro isn't that great. I'd been unhappy with every EF I'd tried until I got the GR2, and I'm enormously staisfied with it, and the BEF Pro has opened up new worlds of sonic exploration, plus when I use a phaser setting on the BEF Pro, I can kick in the GR2 on top. :D

Not gonna fall into the "best" trap.....I'm just sayin' that I've had a Groove Regulator for a couple years now and just recently picked up a Xerograph Deluxe. They're both incredible filters and I can actually justify having both on my board. I don't think I'll ever sell either of these as together they can cover a lot of sonic territory.
