Best/Favourite Slim Protective Lightweight Gig Bag (2025)

So yes, the title pretty much covers it. What is your favourite slim and lightweight gig bag that still provides significant protection? I am not talking about dust cover-style cheapo entry level gig bags.

For ultra slim, these ones are the more commonly found ones around here (Quebec, Canada):

Levy's used to have the CM19, but I dot see it available anymore or a similar equivalent.

Bags that I have, or have owned:
Access Stage Three (older model with a pocket at the top of the headstock)
Mono M80 (light and protective, but a bit bulky)
Mono Vertigo (okay, but not much pocket space)
Gator Transit (okay, but pesky pocket flap and I had to make my own lifting hoop through the offset front loops)
Various Levy's models

Features I like/want:

• A good sized pocket with no flap.
• A front mid section lifting loop.
• Straps that are sewn in at the top and not hooked/clips to a ring.
• A top/headstock pocket.
• Hard panels preferred (but not 100% obligatory if there's enough protection).
• Slim.
• Lightweight.
• Not a fan of Velcro neck flap inside the case.

I know there are several companies (new or old) that I don't really know about and even when seeing Dr. Case pictures from NAMM 2025, I was thinking "who is that?".

My favourite and the one I use almost exclusively right now is the Access Stage 3, but it's fairly heavy. They have updated it to be lighter and changed/improved the straps from the hook to central ring design, but they also got rid of the headstock pocket. I wouldn't consider it that slim either.

So, I know there are a lot of gig bags out there. What are you using? What are your favourite features and what is lacking? And what are your recommendations if you have something you're 100% happy with?

I will say that the Gator ProGo seems to hit all the marks except for maybe weight (I don't see it published) and it's not the slimmest.

I have the Gator ProGo.

Pros: lightweight (I don't remember exactly but I think it's 7.5 lbs.), headstock pocket (I use it all the time for keys, phone, small spare items), front handle, interior is good for my angled headstock bass.

Cons: the carabiner connector for the backpack strap. It broke and I hadn't used it that often (long story short, I waited too long to contact Gator, when I did last year they could not provide a replacement part, just a discount on a new bag). I just carry it by the main side handle.

Note: depending on your needs the bag is not as rigid as my Protec Contego. There is a little give when you squeeze the frame. The Protec is a bit heavier though (possibly 11 lbs.?) and has the interior neck strap. Also like you mentioned, it is not slim.

Even with the negative, I use it the most (transporting it to and from church so no rough handling/environment).

I also have a Mono Sleeve, but I use it occasionally and only with my bass that has a regular headstock (not angled). I like the weight and it's really slim but by nature really limited on pockets, handles. And that infamous flap.

I'd like to hear other responses. I'm curious about Reunion Blues products too.

Only at the top. That’s not necessarily a down check, though.

I’m about ready to pull the trigger on a Reunion Blues “Aero”. Not 100% if it will be to slim for my Warwick. Thinking I’ll make the 90 minute drive to Chuck Levin’s where it is supposedly in stock.

That looks like a nice case too. I generally prefer the aesthetic of a tapered neck case and for the slight size reduction too, but that and the ProTec Contego look like solid choices.

@Smallmouth_Bass I feel your situation, but "First World Problems" right? That ProTec looks solid, so does the Gator. I'm feeling the inside of the Gator more, I like the little area the tail slides into, but honestly would expect a strap for the neck cradle in this caliber.

One idea that has served me well in similar circumstances: Assuming you have the credit-card cushion:
- Find places that have an easy / solid / free return policy
- Buy 2 or 3 different ones, try them out at home
- Keep the one that's best for you and return the rest

Indeed! I don't actually need another gig bag and I could keep what I have and be fine. In fact, the Access Stage 3 is a really good gig bag and I could possibly just "upgrade" to the newer model and I am leaning in that direction if I do end up upgrading, which I haven't totally decided on yet anyway.

I just figured I would query the board's wisdom!

Yes, their website indicates the ProGo to be 7.64 lbs.

I don't know! It's hard to tell when I don't have it on my back. The best I can do is compare them to each other.

I would consider it fairly lightweight for me, my Mono Sleeve is 5 lbs, and the Gator sits between that and the Protec.

Also @Smallmouth_Bass the Protec has the neck cradle velcro wrap.

Yeah, I saw that. The thing with Velcro is that it wears out after a while and then becomes useless. A good gig bag should have longevity to it.

I just got a Sire gig bag that is very solid for the money. I got the short scale bag for my modded EBO and it fits great. It is very similar to my full size RBX bag which is very good and a work horse for me. Both fully structured. For lighter duty the Fender midrange bag is decent. I keep all my bags and basses on a closet shelf so the top opening Mono bags do not work for me, but they are excellent too

I have to second this. I have both a single and a double, and they just seem to be the most practical.

I have a Gator Transit, and it’s solid. Also have the standard type of Gator, and it’s not bad either.

Probably the best in the Mono Vertigo. However, I can’t justify the price of a new one.

I have a Gator Transit as well (guitar model for an Ibanez EHB headless) I think it is very good except for that God awful pocket flap. It you don't use it, it looks nice, but not functional in my option.
