Best Fender Precision under $1,000 USD

I own two P Basses.

One an 85 MIJ A series similar to the one I mentioned above. It has a green back pickup and plays with ease. Cost $550
Two is a 75 P with a Lollar pickup. Worst refin ever but, thumps like a boss. Cost $1000

Not sure what the best is to you but the classic 50's Precision Bass has to be up there if you want an old school playing PBass (thicker, wider neck, sounds sick with flats).

If you don't like that type of neck, the Nate Mendel gets rave reviews. It does have a pickup that some people don't like, but you could easily swap that out and still be under $1,000.

Wes JETT, whats your take on the Fender Aerodyne Jazz (PJ)? It's a made in Japan model. It's the first Fender Bass I have seen made out of Basswood (usually Ash or Alder)?

I want to try a NM Precision too. Does it give you the old school style funk sound?

I am also looking for a new Precision myself. In the 1000-1400$ price range? so slightly more budget than the OP? any suggestions?
It has to have the typical P bass growl and I like the old school Headhunters funk sound.

Used American Standard P. Then again, I don't know what's best for you. Get out there and play as many basses as you can, then make your own decision. There are great P's everywhere. You say you've owned many P basses and none of them are what you want. Maybe your not a P guy. Try some other basses.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that there are plenty of import-made Fenders that are of equal or greater quality than some USA models. I've been collecting basses for about 15 years (more actively in the last 5 or so) and have owned many great pieces - some of which I held on to, others come and go, or get traded for new gear...The one bass I've always tried to acquire is that perfect P bass...I've owned 3 or 4, everything from Squier, to Mexi Std., Mexi Reissue, and USA Std., but somehow, none of them were really the right fit for me, for various different reasons. I'd love to have a great P bass in my arsenal, but I think it'll be the kind of thing that I will have to keep searching for...

For me nothing beats the vintage original fenders 70s down! The older the more original well earned MOJO the better!! But thats just my opinion and taste! I do agree with you 100% with exception to the vintage fender Basses that have a certain sound and feel you just can't get now a days!
i agree with the whole price difference on U.S.A made VS made in mexico/japan etc. thing!
USA made is Way overrated! No disrespect intended to US Fender guys & gals !

So Yes !! You're rite! it is the kind of thing that you and only you will have to keep searching for!
as what mite be great, good or even bad for others doesnt mean it will be for you! Dont give up , dont loose hope! Take your time and keep searching ! Good luck.
