I am a fan of the Japan-made Fender stuff - probably the most consistently high quality instruments from fender from my experience - they're getting harder and harder to come by these days!

They are out there, but shipping kills it. Add an extra buck fifty to whatever you paid

I vote newer Am Standard. I got an 09 off the classifieds here and it's a gem. This one even had the pickup already replaced.

Go pick up every Mexican P bass you can find. I bought one used from Guitar Center. It had never been setup right and had very low mileage for a 17 year old bass. After a set up and replaced the cracked nut, it became my favorite player. Now it wears a fretless P neck I bought in 1976 and it's neck is on my old Jazz Bass. I've wanted a sunburst fretless P Bass since I fell in love with the one in the 1975 Fender catalog. After 42 years I'm finally home.

I bought a '97 P-Bass "California Special" a few years back for $650; MIA, very well balanced PJ setup; Hardware is a bit cheesy (tuners are kinda stiff/cheap, as is the bridge) but it plays, sounds and looks great.

The 80's MIJ E-Series are a cool part of the Fender story. The one in my sig cost me $400. Cleaned it up. Set up. Flatwounds. Nice.

I was going to say the American Special, but Fender raised the price to just above $1000 sometime after I last looked....

I guess the Japanese Classic series it is.

As some others here have indicated, it's hard to say buy this P bass or that P bass. To get what you think is a good one you have to play a lot of them. I know people who swear by their Squire P basses and some people who love their no name knock offs with aftermarket pickups. Some people will not be satisfied with anything less than a Lull or Sadowsky. There are good ones and bad ones out there, so enjoy the hunt.
