hey Ben,

it was actually Trip who was telling me that he heard Karn had done some work with a pick!

along the same lines, some of my favorite Geddy stuff was done with his thumb and fingernails simulating a pick.

and to cap it off, Mr. Wamsley may be a killing fingerstyle player, but he's done about 50% of what I've seen with a pick! check that photo from BP where he's jamming with Pomeroy, Manring, Dickens, and Dimin and you'll see evidence in print of what I'm talking about.

does this mean that I think of these cats differently? not at all. I do think of them as not purely fingerstyle players, though.

Steuart Liebig is another monster fingerstyle cat who can shred with a pick.

after seeing Les Claypool take the stage alone during a Primus show about 7 years ago and play an electric stand-up solo for what seemed like an eternity, i was in a dazed, blissful state of awe for weeks. he is ridiculous.

Matt Freeman from Rancid is great for finger style. Some really fast stuff... I suggest learning "Maxwell Murder"... awesome (but difficult) bass solo, even if you don't like Rancid. Pretty good for a 1:26 minute song.
