Best Fuzz/OD for Bass

I haven't yet been able to decide on an OD but a couple of months back I found a truly wonderful website dedicated to Bass OD pedals which I am working through.

It's a bit like the Compressor Pedal guy website.

And the guy with pd7 listed - yep that was my fav for ages till the cog 66 mini replicated the OD from that (to me anyway) and blew it out the water... bass / low mid goodness tones... pity aftershock never really found a setting that did that for me, or I never really got on with having to play with it so much to get away from standard tones to the stuff I like.

My personal favorite fuzz pedals are the EHX Nano Bass Big Muff Pi and the Mightysound M3 Fuzz. Your mileage may vary. For the price, ($19+$10 shipping) You may just want to try that ME. I'm glad I did. It lives on my pedalboard now.

On the distortion side,I used to have an Ibanez PD-7 Phat Hed. That's the only bass distortion I've tried that I really liked. I'd love to find something like that in 1590A size.

My OD choices based on what I've tried are the Joyo Ultimate Drive and the Donner Obsessive. They are both OCD clones and seem to do a good job driving the bass tone without losing much low end.

I have both the Joyo Ultimate and the Mosky Obsessive. They both sound almost exactly the same. The Joyo has a bit higher output and is a teeny bit more transparent but by adjusting the knobs I can get them the same. Great little 1590A OD for cheap!

The key is to run parallel rigs. A clean amp and a fuzz/dirty amp. That’s how Chris Wolstenholme did it! That’s how America does it! and it’s worked out pretty well so far.

Way Huge is definitely awesome. I also love the sound of muffs, and I personally have a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian. I heard SUF's Civil War is even better at preserving low end.

I got a gig coming up where we do Spanish Castle Magic with an extended guitar solo, and I could just sit back and play that C# jam with my muff all night long....

Ah, The Internet. Where people who haven't tried everything come to proclaim the thing they have tried and like as the "the best."


I'm sure the pedal in the OP is pretty nice, as are many of the others mentioned in the thread.

I've bought and sold many a OD, distortion and fuzz pedal - most of which were good to great. As been mentioned before me, what sounds good is entirely subjective, thus making nothing the "best."

I'm not even going to say what I'm using now... cause my ears are different that everyone else's and it doesn't matter what I'm a fanboy of.

Edit: regarding the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian and SUF's Civil War... they're both variations on very good. Pick one and be happy. Or, be like me and try another dozen Muff derivatives, before you settle on one.

I had a W&C Green Russian. I like that Green clone vibe.

Interesting. My favorite guitarist; David Gilmour, used it on the Division Bell (Soon to be listened to and posted on the Last Album You Listened To forum). Also, The Black Keys guitarist used it.

It might be more effective into the amp's input. Worth a try to see if there's a difference. It's the tube amp's first stage, at the input, that you want to hit hard.

best is subjective. My favor pedals. are MDB-1. thinman OD. Bedlam III. Gamma OD. Bluebeard. Hyperfuzz. Bassweet. Fran lo-tone. Alien hate Fuzz. Growlers the main sound. I'm still looking for a good Russian Muff equivalent.

Have you tried the R. Pickle? One of the reasons I bought it, other than the sound, is that I read that Jeorge Tripps got hold of the original parts from Russia so, this one will be kind of unique being that when the parts run out (and there aren't many left), so will the pedal. I like unique Supposedly the sound resembles the original Big Muff of the 90's, which I've never actually heard, but I like this pedal because it gives my bass the fuzz tone I crave. I actually thought what I wanted was OD until I put this on my bass. I bought this pedal for my guitar. Sounds great with the guitar, but it seriously works wonders for the bass. IMO.

Won't comment on what's best, but I currently have an Idiotbox Blower Box and a Darkglass Duality on my board. I can get that edgy barely-broken-up sound to incoherent wall of square wave nonsense with this pairing. I've cycled through a bunch of dirt and these two have really shined with my basses.

When you find it, it feels great. I know that feeling now!

Never heard a dirt pedal I didn't like. I don't have a lot of use for them at the time, but I like'em all !!


(my current OD comes from the SansAmp and I use a DI+ based patch for distortion on 1 song. No fuzz required with my current project at this time )

For Fuzz: Abominable Electronics Hail Satan Deluxe. This pedal has tons of low end. There's a toggle switch to go between the NYC muff sound or the Green Russian. Clean blend with optional buffer. Mids and highs knobs and a toggle to use Red LEDs for clipping. So much awesome in this box.

I gotta say this pedal is truly wicked (no pun intended). I listened to a Youtube demo. Can't beat the goat with the pentagram in the center of it's forehead either

I've got a trunk full of pedals and out of all of them I like my programmable Bass Driver DI and an el-cheapo Behringer BD121. To be honest, the Behringer is probably as good as the BDDI but the programmable feature gives me 4 (counting the unit in bypass) different usable tones at the push of a pedal button.
