Best Head/Cab Combination for under $1k

I'm looking for something that has a awesome tone for anything from rock to punk to jazz to blues to funk and heavier rock and of course it needs to be loud and handle drop D/low B strings etc. I would like to hear your suggestions but right now I'm looking at the ampeg pf-500 with the 115 and the orange bass terror 500 but the orange doesn't come with a cab so it would run higher than $1k most likely. I play a 98 Mex P bass just to let you know but just let me hear your opinions.

Shop used, and go play through everything you possibly can. 300-500 watts shopuld be sufficient for all but the largest of venues, and don't skimp on the speakers. A good 2x12 or 4x10 should be a good start.

The PF-500 is a good choice, unfortunately neither Traynor nor Peavey offer a 4-ohm 4x10, which is what you should get ideally. A used SWR Goliath III 4 ohm 4x10 should be within your grasp. Same goes for the Ampeg SVT-410HLF, but the SWR is smaller, 20 lbs lighter, more efficient, and takes more punishment. Can't recall too many brands offering a 4 ohm 4x10, which is really odd.

Haha alright thanks for the suggestions and you're not being a smart-ass you're telling the truth. I was just wondering opinions before an hour to gc and spend 1k on garbage haha

I would go with a 12/6 or 15/6 fEARful. Light and loud, and will sound great with a PF-500.

I think you can get a Fearful 15/6 built for $600 - $700, or you could get the Avatar 3-way cab for about that price. You should be able to get a used 500 watt micro-head (Little Mark, Eden WTX, etc) with the remaining $300 - $400. That would be loud, clean, easily portable, and definitely handle the low B.

I'd consider Carvin and Peavey heads too. They aren't "status symbols" among bassists, but they are rock-solid reliable and much less expensive than the upscale amps.
