Best Head/Cab/Combo for Hard Rock?

I use an eden into 2 ampeg cabs. I get a great rock sound from it.

Anything with tubes is gonna give you a rock growl...

gk, ampeg, eden... it's all a matter of taste.

i like the eden because of the tube-like warmth and i like how the ampegs can really growl with high gain. it's a very tight rock sound.

Seems like you could choose anything you want...

I mentioned SWR because I've seen quite a few bands lately with SWR rigs. Most of them had a more electronic sound but they were still definitely hard rock. Static-X comes to mind. 311.

Just the find the cab that can take a beating, push a lot of air and maintain any sound you want to put through it. Then find the head that works best for you. You'll continue to get 20 different heads and 30 different cab suggestions. There are just way too many options out there these days.

Well I could ask the smart questions:

1) What is your budget for both head and cab?
2) What type of hard rock are you aiming for?
3) What does your pedalboard look like?
4) What amps do the guitarists use?
5) What tones from hard rock do you like?

But that would be cumbersome, wouldn't it?

What I use for my metal band is;
modulus Q5 --> aguilar db750 --> aguilar 412 cab. I really like this set up. Other rigs Ive had and sounded great were ebs td650 into berg nv610 and a trace head into a berg 322. All three rigs were different and for my tastes, made for metal. :bassist:

I'm going to say there are so many options that there is really no "best" rig. You can get many different sounds from different rigs... The Mesa 400+ with JJ tubes paired with an Aggie 412 or Bergie 215/610 does it for me. Or a vintage SVT. Or a TE V8. Or an Aggie DB 728 with a good preamp. The list is endless, so I'm going to stop here.

Don't spend too much time patting yourself on the back pal. You're reading way too much into the original question. The dude just wants to know our opinions on what gear sounds the best with hard rock 'n roll. He also asked that the replies come from personal expereince.

My Ag500 is amazing for rock/metal. The saturation channel really adds the grit and aggressiveness w/out getting lost in the mix. Love it. The only thing I would take over it is the DB750, but the 500 is only 18 pounds making it very portable. i walk into a metal gig with my Ag strapped over my right shoulder, bass on the left, and a berg 112 cab in each hand. And I always get comments on my great tone.

Portable and powerfull head good for rock... thinking... DB750, but thats not really light... How bout a DB 680 with a good power amp? Ohhhh! :eek: Eden WT-800! That would be perfect. With maybe a Schroeder cab? Or Eden 210(s). That would be an awesome rig. On second thought, Ashdowns are pretty light too. The Evo-II amp is very awesome and great for rock! And as you said, a Mesa hybrid perhaps if you can find one.

A Thunderfunk with Schroeder cabs will punch through anything. Great for ROCK! Accugroove cabs with Thunderfunk work for any sound that a Bass can make! Any Pedal's sounds or any tweaks of your EQ will be heard through the Accugrooves. Yes, I use both cabs. Warwick,Sadowsky, Mike Lull, Spector, Drake and Fender Basses are played through a combination of Thunderfunk heads and Schroeder and/or Accugroove cabs. I also have an Aguilar TH500 for backup to my Thunderfunks, although I've never needed it. Thunderfunks are BulletProof! All of this is my Experience and Opinion only. Of course, I've been playing for 48 years....... Still, "Everybody has their own opinion......................" as Janes Addiction sings! Rock On!

The Schroeders that I mention are the older, folded cab styles. They are phenomenal for playing live. At home or in a smaller area, they don't perform as well. The Accugroove cabs are perfect anywhere. Both brands are my favorite cabs and excel for what applications they are made for.
