best head for hardcore/heavy music

Assuming that grindy/clanky high end attack sound is what you're going for, I think GK is your best bet of the options. Honestly, if what you have suits your volume needs, I'd find a dirt pedal you like and use that.
Well I used one of these this past weekend, and it was not enough for the metal.
Not sure what model it was, but it was not loud enough to keep up with the full stacks and hard hitting drummer.
I wanted to use my rack setup, but change over times were short so I went with what was on stage.
Sounded good, just not loud enough. had to stand right over the monitor wedge to hear myself.

Holy geez, I don't want to be within a 20-mile radius of your gigs if an SVT and 810 isn't enough for you! That's the SVT-AV, BTW. Same as the CL but with the old school SVT look.

If the 'fridge wasn't loud enough, something must have been wrong. Was it placed in that cancellation zone 2~6 feet from back wall or corner? Amp-wise, was the tone set to scoop too much? Hope you are using ear protection.
Here is an Acoustic 320 and a fridge.

If you can afford it, get a vintage Orange Carrote (NOT the reissue)! With it the bass will practically punch the listener in the face (but the reissue is wimpy as $$$$$$$$$)
Amps were all about 5 - 8 feet out from the back wall I think.
Had all the controls flat, and used the tone hammer for a little kick in the high mids.
The marshalls are both 100 watt JMPs running full blast, 2 kick drums, all toms mic'd.
It was a battle field on stage, sound was bouncing everywhere, but everyone in the crowd loved it. I couldn't hear myself unless I was either right in front of the amp or hovering over the monitor wedge on my side of the stage.
And yes, I wear the custom molded ear plugs.
And yes, most folks that night who didn't wear earplugs probably received some sort of damage.
Did pretty good at the merch table thanks to my buxom girlfriend. I always get a kick out of watching guys give her cash hand over foot just to talk to her and get a funny t-shirt.

That could have indeed been one part of the problem. 8' and more, is okay, but when you get closer, cancellation will be an issue. And if the Marshall stacks were right next to you, there's no way you will hear your instrument. How did it sound in the audience?
the band that played after us (Satan - UK) sounded pretty good, but the sound guy was kinda lame and kept adjusting things up and down during their set unnecessarily. I told them to un plug the top cabinets of the marshall stacks so they could hear better, and they followed my advice and were able to hear themselves a little better than us on stage.
the gf says our set sounded rough during the 1st song, but then the sound guy was able to put the vocals up enough to hear.
and after that is was a sonic uproar of gargantuan proportions.
Other folks who have seen us before said similar stuff, so I assume it was alright after the fist song or two.
I always just lock into the kick drum and play like I do in practice.

What do you need the head to do? I've played Hartke, Orange, Ampeg (most of them), SWR, Acoustic (Vintage), Acoustic (New), Tech 21, Sansamp w/ Crest, Fender combos, GK, Markbass, etc, etc., etc, etc.
All of them will work to some extent. You just need to know what the head needs to do and then buy accordingly.
I play loud dirty metal and I've been using the Hartke HA5500 as of late. It's clinical and sterile sounding but I use a bunch of dirt pedals to get a killer tone.
In a dense mix you can't tell the difference between that and an SVT.

Got to use a SansAmpBox-> GK700 -> SVT 8x10 cab. GREAT combination. No idea on the reliability.
Also got to see an Ampeg head FAIL at showtime and the poor guy was very unprepared....had to DI into the monitors.

SansAmp RBI or the one Geddy uses -> QSC power amp -> 8x10.
My current "cabinet pushing rack" is Sansamp RBI->DBX 166xL(set to be almost inaudible for extending speaker life)->QSC 2402.
Works great for ACME B2's, SWR Henry, or an SVT 8x10.

yep, I use the RBI into the QSC PLX 3402 with the tone hammer for eq & snap.
works great on just about any cabinet I've used it with, and always with headroom to spare.
Travels well, too. never have a problem with reliability.
I woulda used it, but things were a bit crazy backstage and the SVT looked cool and usually does the job, but not this time.
