Limiting my list to electric players working on moderately traditional jazz gigs (I'm excluding fusion and world-stuff - I'm looking for settings where an upright would be expected or at least appropriate) - Anthony Jackson (based on his work with Michel Petrucciani and Michel Camilo) and Steve Swallow top my list.

Double Bass best jazz bassist?

There is a point (let's call it "virtuosity") where it's not a matter of better, but who do you enjoy listening to the most. There is a collection of truely excellent players past and present and I don't think you can apply any logic to who is better than whom amongst them.

Don't diss Dick Smothers... I played with them in the pit, and he plays perfectly in tune. Nothing fancy, but he gets the job done.
hmmm... that's funny. if he overpowers everyone else... why do i listen to Mr. PC, Ray Brown, NHOP, and Scott Lafaro 50 million times more than i listen to jaco.
he's a great bass player (maybe the best electric player) but to mandate how all the bass players on TB must think Jaco is the ultimate jazz bass player is a larceny.

first of all, this is an upright bass thread, and why post something that belongs to the other side? personally, i personally don't think jaco is no.1, same as with anyone else. and i would never choose jaco, an electric bassist, over an upright player any time of the day as the greatest bass player ever. enough said.

My favorite DB players? Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden, and Sam Jones-if i can only pick 4.
Favorite Jazz BG? It's hard for me to say with out going into Fusion territory. I haven't really listened to much straight ahead jazz that has BG on it.
The Jaco comment-i'm an admitted Jaco fanatic. I got hipped to all sorts of great music through him. E.g. Weather Report lead me to checking out Wayne Shorter's solo stuff [lucky enough to see him Live] and from Wayne Shorter into Miles etc. Really helped open my eyes. I still listen to my Jaco Albums, but not nearly as much as i listen to the DB cats now a days.
