another thought: what i like to do for OD is use an ART Tube MP through my Fx loop. it's like $55 and I like it.
I also like the Boss OD/Distortion pedal for a bit of extra crunch. IME it's been really smooth, a little fuzzy and a little crunchy. Also about $60

Look into the Crowther Hot Cake. It has a switch inside for guitar or bass signals (it also has a bluesberry switch). I've heard it keeps the low end nice and adds just enough OD, so it doesn't get too crunchy. I know Laura from Superchunk uses one, as does Denise of the 3Ds, so you can use them as a reference. Laura said in an interview that she didn't get hers until touring with the 3Ds, around '94, so I think Here's Where the Strings Come In is the album to start with.

It's like the swiss army knife of perfect overdrive tone... You can dial in just the right amount of overdrive and blend to your liking. It's like three pedals in one.... There is an EQ and compression on the front end that you can leave on all the time. Then you can just switch the overdrive off and on as you wish. It's pure analog high voltage rock and roll!!!
