Best material for a pick?

I use the black Dunlop nylon 1mm's. Seems to be just the right thickness and you don't get any click like you do with plastic. Plus they have the little rough grip area so you don't drop it. I used to use graphite picks from Pickboy, but they quit making them. Those were the best picks and they lasted forever. I still have one from about 20 years ago.

I myself prefer Tortex 0.85 (the lime green ones)

they just feel right in my fingers and they have enough click and bend that i can express my attack as much (or as little) as I want to

Edit: It should be noted that I go through at least two picks per show, and the third one i finish with doesn't last long... they definetly wear but I feel they're worth it!

I made some wooden picks for Steve Swallow back in the early 80's out of laminated ebony veneer. They sounded good, but wore out fast, so he just used them for ballads. Now he uses custom copper picks, last I heard.

I really like the rubber Wedgie picks that I get from MF. It's a unique sound - fat, with no sharp pang. For a fingerstyle player like me, it's a fun change of pace that gives my sound a more reserved cutting attack. I'm mostly picking on flats, which gives the sound an extra twist.

Lots of bassists mock pick players. Try playing with a pick before you make fun. It can be a real challenge. It took me a long time to get out of the "total klutz" category when I started using a pick. And I still have a long way to go.

I really like Sam Ash heavy picks for some reason, and the mediums are great with my short scale EB-2. If I don't have any lying around (I never go to Sam Ash, I just like their picks), I go for the green dunlop turtle picks. I believe they're .88mm.

i carve my picks out of wood, preferable something softer than hard, but usually about 2-3mm thick. don't get any clack with them

I do both pick and finger, but would like something in between felt and plastic...some kind of rubber like material.

With pick stuff on the low strings I like to do downstrokes and let my index fingernail hit the string just before the pick...gives a bit of a raspy double attack that I like on some stuff. Anyone else do that?

Phil uses heavy graphite picks (as does Trey and maybe Mike) so that could be a good way to go.

My favorite so far is lignum vitae. I've purchased a few picks from this guy: http://surfpick.com/ and I have beeen very pleased. I would buy more picks from him but they tend to last me about a year each.

I toss my vote in for the Dunlop Big Stubby. I don't care too much about picks because I'm a finger/funk finger player, but when I loaned my big stubby out to a guitarist friend, he lost it so I made him go buy me another one. lol. it's a really great pick and it provies a TON on crisp, edgy tone. really good for chris squire stuff, I assume.

Personally a fan of heavy Gator picks, have an interesting sound to um, other than that any large heavy pick usually will do the trick, just try a few out, usually no more than 25 cents a pop at a local store

Dunlop 1mm. Thick, but not too thick, and the logo is grippy. Works as a guitar pick in a pinch too.

I use the Green Dunlop Tortex picks. My favorite band's bass player used them, so I started using them. They are the bare minimum as far as I am concerned, using anything lighter might be a problem.

I have tried some heavier stuff, and didn't like how firm the pick was, no flex. It probably has a lot to do with what I am used to playing.

I prefer the original DAVA Control picks...They're stiff enough for a good attack but flexible enough not to keep getting caught on strings. Plus they have a good tip and last a long time.

My favourite pick lately has been the Dunlop Ultex 1.14 - it has almost no give, which I like, but it's not so thick that I feel that I'm losing out on dynamics and feel. The absolute worst picks for bass are those multicoloured celluloid ones; they last me for half a practice at best.

I use Dunlop 'Gator Grip' picks (1.5mm), and they rock! good for Chris Squire style picking.
