Closest I've gotten to one of those was playing a Gibson Victory, I believe. Loved it and I think it was made around the same time. Those 80s Gibsons are really cool! Some day, I'd like the opportunity to try a Gibson Explorer bass...

Is that a necrophagist shirt I see Exospaciac? There one of the only death metal bands where I can actually hear the bass (only ash remains is an absolutely mindblowing song). And whoever mentioned Nile earlier, they're a great band but I don't think I've ever heard audible bass in their songs. Guess thats what happens in drop A tuning!

You can also hear the bass really well on Brain Drill's album. Their bass player is beyond insane.
yeah the warwick vampyre is pretty sweet looking but i would have to try it out since yes believe it or not i do not like warwick that much at all
Neither do i acctualy! Except from their ATB called "Alien", i played a friends dads and i was in 4th heaven and the Buzzard is quite nice also. (his ATB got 4-strings, haha)
I've played the Vampyre by the way, its really heavy and those string are death to fingers, easy to play tho.
Nice and balanced body i think also, the mics pick up loooaaads of sound on that thing.
I think its MADE for being tuned at F# at the fattest string?
Heck, its still a Warwick and they do create nice things even if i dont like em so much.
The Vampyre, Alien and Buzzard are the only Warwicks i like by the way.
Tho the sound in the Vampyre is damn nice, such a growly sound i havent heard in a long time.
It certainly looks metal, acctualy, its so metal Chuck Norris prolly made it.
I got to see Necrophagist last fall with Dying Fetus. It was awesome. Everyone was so tired after DF that everyone just kinda stood around. Partially because Necrophagist were fuggin mesmerizing!!

I LOVE 'EM!!! The only time you can really pick the bass apart from the guitars is on Annihilation Of The Wicked, I think. In Sacrifice Unto Sebek, you can hear it all throughout, once you've gotten used to it, especially in the "Tua Ashemu/Rekhes Au Sebek" part.I remember driving through Seattle at 2AM with my buddy in his convertible blaring Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten. With his stereo, you sure can hear the bass--it's frightening! That has got to be one of my favorite albums...
On the other hand, Cannibal Corpse has taken to writing songs in Ab...and the bass is still really distinct. Has to do with the player, I think. Also in Nile, George, Karl, and Dallas are pretty dominant players and Chief, Jon, and Chris have all kinda gotten buried by them, you know? Damn...I really want to see them live!!
The Warwick Vampyre--I know Siedemann from 1349 uses one of those. Seen them...talk about a COLD bass sound. Damn it is metal!
Although I know I may get flamed for this on a bass forum, I feel that in many newer styles of metal the bass on studio recordings is superflous (but still necessary live). Nile, for example, there is no real need for bass on the records seeing as Karl and Dallas cover those frequencies with their extreme downtuning. There are many other metal bands (Bolt thrower, COB) where I think I couldn't tell if the bass was suddenly cut out. Don't get me wrong bass is my favorite instrument, but this style of music simply doesn't always call for it in my opinion.
But then again on the other hand I think that newer metal bands like Opeth and Tyr have a very strong bass presence.

It's kinda true...the bass is incredibly hard to hear on Nile's stuff, but if it wasn't there, there'd be something missing. Hate Eternal on the other hand...haha I think you might be able to hear Randy Piro on I, Monarch once or twice the entire album.
It's interesting to think of things that way. There's a band round here called Ceremonial Castings--good ol' "bell, book, and candle black metal", as my friend calls it and they don't have a bassist. Even live, they still sound awesome. Having a bassist definitely wouldn't hurt, but they're still badass.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again...Marduk--there's a band with killer, catchy riffs and awesome bass that not too many people think about or dig. Roger Svensson, their bassist for about 12 years is the epitome of flamboyance and in-your-face tone, yet you never hear about him, even among metal fans. And he kinda disappeared after he quit Marduk, which is sad.
warwicks are my favorite although i get sick grind with the p bass and a sansamp
i dig the vampyre above me very nice playing and deffinately looks metal.
Heck I play on a Vampyre ROCKBASS 5'er and it sounds great, my old band used c# tuning and it cut through very well.
