Best Modern Rock Bassist?

Actually it was the quasi-prog-metal one. They didn't make a "dubstep album", they recorded one faux-dubstep song. And "super tween pop one"? ¿Qué?

EDIT: You know, this thread is probably going to go downhill pretty quick...

Definitely not my intent. I just thought it'd be interesting if TB had the same opinions on these bassists as the listeners of DC101 do.

I agree with the sentiments that Krist should not be in the finals. Nirvana has a certain star power, and I guess people vote for him based on that. It's worth mentioning that Dave Grohl won DC101's "Best Modern Rock Drummer" poll, beating out Travis Barker in the final round...that may be partly because DC loves Dave Grohl, and partly because he was a part of Nirvana.

Regardless, I didn't intended this thread to be a platform for hatred. I just wanted to see what others thought of the poll.

And partly because, all that aside, Dave is still a pretty awesome musician. He's played in at least four great rock bands (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, and Queens of the Stone Age), and was one of the early standard-bearers of post-grunge, which on the one hand gave us Nickelback, and on the other gave us Breaking Benjamin.

AND he's apparently done an @$$-ton of session work for other musicians. In other words, I think he's earned his fame, big-time.

Krist has been a great activist, but best or second-best bassist of modern rock? Naaahhh.

Grohl is an amazing drummer in his own right. I wouldn't place him as greatest modern drummer....but he certainly deserves a semi- final seed.

I guess I should have clarified that I too love Dave Grohl. One band he did session work for is RDGLDGRN, a DC-Area band (Reston, Virginia). He played drums on their EP, and (I believe) on their first LP as well. Without a doubt he's earned his fame; I regard him as an awesome musician, and he seems like a great human being as well. Don't even get me started on the Sound City documentary... He's a great drummer, and a fantastic musician.

I didn't demean him personally at all, all of my comments are directed at his opinion.

The first line of his comment, claiming that some of the most influential contemporary rock players from the last two decades aren't any good at all, is obviously ignorant and ego-driven.

The post this is in response to added nothing to the thread aside from ego and negativity.

Leaving Robert DeLeo off the list is pretty ridiculous considering some of the other guys they included, and other great, more 'modern', players like Jon Stockman from Karnivool are missing as well.

So no, not a great list...who else do we think is missing?

In my opinion, Chris Wolstenholme is my favourite bass player. If you've ever listened to Origin of Symmetry you'll know what I mean, let alone seen him live!

I used to think the bass was a bit of a boring, unnecessary, background instrument but when when I first went to see Muse live, the raw power coming from Chris's bass just overwhelmed me and I went out and bought one the next day! I've been playing ever since.

I've not heard any other bassist use fuzz as well as Chris does. He uses it so well he can still provide the earth-shaking backdrop for Muse that he's know for and make the bass as much as a lead instrument as the guitar.

He's my main influence but a mention for Justin Chancellor, Tim Commerford and Flea too :)
