BEST (NEW) BASS UNDER $300

a. The selection of product around $300 or less is way better than when I was younger
b. I would guess 1/4 the people here know someone who had neck issues with a new machine
c. I know people who gig/record with many of the basses listed here
d. I have seen miracles worked with "un-repairable" necks, it becomes a cost vs value desiscion
e. If you like it, buy it.
f. Seldom have I bought something that somebody didn't come up with a better idea or deal

Sooo based on some recommendations here, I decided to pull the trigger on a used Yamaha BB234 from guitar center online that they say is in “great” condition. After tax AND shipping it ended up being $184... way too good a price to pass up. Just hoping it lives up to the hype!

Ibanez Talman 100. Fantastic value, rugged enough for a van tour in a gig bag. ( I know from experience ) , great neck and quality control. The 2 band EQ sounds very good and is more useful than I thought it would be, really helpful when using an unknown back-line. I tried every bass in the store to find something I wouldn't be afraid to put in a gig bag in the overhead, coat closet, or van. The TMB 100 was the last bass I played before almost leaving the store and it knocked me out. BTW, nothing but compliments on the gigs and whole lot of "what bass are you using" from other bands and musicians. Plus, every one I have played in a store is consistent, so much so, that I would go to GC and buy one, and play a gig. My other basses are a Les Paul Triumph and 66 P Bass, which do not travel. I liked the TMB line so much that I bought a 600 (with Norstrand PU's) and a 30 Short scale. These needed more setup than the 100. I did change the PU's in the 30 to Dimarzio's. The Ibanez quality is off the charts IMHO.

I don't follow. They have a few basses on the site they claim has American Swamp Ash or American Alder. The ones I linked are one of each; One or both came with a little flag sticker saying so.

Will never get over their horrid headstock choice... thankfully the newer ones remedy that!

Squire is a nice bass for $300. Whatever you get, be sure to try it before you buy it. You're not going to get the same QC on a $300 Squire as you will on a $1,300 American Standard.

Does Fender still make Am Std's ?

I don’t think they do, but you can still find them in stock at many locations. I was just using that particular instrument for comparison purposes.

I hear you. I love my Am Std. It looks like they mostly changed the name to American Professional and raised the prices. Glad I bought the Am Std when I did.

That makes more sense. It does seem extraordinarily high priced. There has been some ridiculous prices lately for vintage junk.

Good choice on the BB! I'm a big fan and would've been my first recommendation. Otherwise, I'd say this bass might be what you're looking for based on your avatar...

Wise choice methinks. Great price and Yamaha makes a great instrument, and the fact that you can return it to any GC is a nice bit of peace of mind.
