Double Bass Best new double Bass maker.....?

I think 8-10k is the tops for the best from China being Shen 800-Rogeri or other. Using German or other wood may add 1k at most. The good Chinese wood is some of the best I have seen. I am ok with Chinese maple and spruce if it's of high quality.

I had the opportunity to play the 14k Chinese as well, and it was well worth the money. An instrument like that made by another maker would sell for upwards of 20k. It was an exceptional instrument, with a wicked price tag. Keep in mind we're talking Canadian dollars too.

The work done by American Luthiers keeps getting better and better. I really like Arnold's basses. I played in a bass sextet this summer with someone playing his latest ergonomic bass, and it had a nice presence up against some other very nice basses in the sextext (Don Palma's Hornsteiner, Rufus Reid's bass, Steve Tramantozzi's guitar shaped). Nice bass.

I played a bass by Mr Bollbach at Gage's last year that was also a fine instrument.

I have a a bass made by Sergio Scaramelli in Farrara in 1996 that has a really rich and present sound. I've had it for 9 months or so and it continues to impress me (and others).

Anyone else play a Scaramelli? Are there other modern Italian Luthiers doing interesting work?

Has anyone looked at Anton Krutz Basses? They are quite interesting, and have a wonderful sound! I'm a newbie, and I live in the Midwest US. My options are a bit limited....

my previous teacher had an anton krutz bass as his solo instrument. one of his students had an anton krutz five string that was played by the elder Krutz in the symphony (i think). i never really heard the five string, but the bass my teacher had sounded very very nice and it was only a few months old.

Scramelli restored my Martini in 1999. His Repair label is inside the Bass. Paul Biase is his friend and recently brought a Scaramelli here and sold it fairly quick. Arnold had a chance to see it but I didn't. Ask him about that Bass.

I was wondering where you played my 5-string Pollmann. Just curious. Because I still have it.

Hahah what are the odds? The bass was actually at Joe Messina's house for a few days. I had never seen a 5 string in person before so he let me play for a few minutes on it. I'm not sure you were ever supposed to find out that happened.

Any pics of a Hachez online? I'm very curious at this point.

Well right now I am starting to look at new basses. It will soon be time to upgrade to a nice carved bass. BTW, Does anyone know how to date a bass that only has a sticker "Made in Wesern Germany" ? I have been trying to figure it out the last two years, with not much luck. Everyone in my circles are stumped.....

I recentely played a Rossi modell by Nolli, sweet sound , bigger string length proportions, i think is a good solo bass but I also played Rossi antiquized modell by Krammer poelmann and for lower register ( orchestral work) there is an clear adventage for Krammer, being quality of sound better in the Nolli. I also played time ago some scaramelli basses and I must say that is a litte bit less level than krammer Poelman and Nolli, this is just my opinion after played those instruments...

I see. Now that makes sense. That must have been right after we have fixed the bass. It opened up and sounds great now.

Oh, was the Pollmann a bass that you bought in bad shape and fixed up? For some reason that sounds familiar.... Glad it's serving you well, at any rate.
