Best P-Bass for $1500ish

But I DO think SpectorBass308 MAYBE has a point.

For example, if I were looking for a new '08 American Standard P, and they didn't have any in this galaxy or any other nearby galaxies, I'd be darned certain to get a NAS Jazz, based on this recommendation. :p

In fact, those J's that I've played do match the NASP's in quality of fit and finish,
even though they are just J's. :D :D :D

Have to jump in here on the 2008 American Standard series. So far I've played three different jazzes and two P Basses, and not a stinker in the bunch. Don't like the 5 strings nearly as well but the fours are really quite good. These American Standards have forced me to leave my wallet at home when taking my son to his drum lessons at the local music store.

I'm also getting temped by the G&L 2000 suprised nobody mentioned those. In responce to the guy with the 57 I've played a couple n they're cool and look awesome, but the raised A really does irritate, I tend to tap the strings a lot on off beats and the A string sticks to the pickup. I suppose I could switch the pickup for a Lindy or 62. Anyway the search continues, more oppinions would be appreciated, I'll let everyone know what happens.

Do you see the point? I don't think that fender std hardware and pups would be better for reissue, and vintage pups and vintage bridge is not well suitable for standard series. It's just a matter of preferences.

I have 62 US VIntage P-bass, and I really dig it. It's great but smooth bass - I think it wouldn't sound in iron-maiden-like music. Still, it's a great and versatile p-bass. I love the nitro finish, reverse tunning keys ( I hate this little hipshots in new fenders ! )

I've played my '57 at full volume through my Ampeg SVT and had no distortion issues. It's definitely a hot pickup, very punchy. If it's too hot for you just grab a screwdriver and lower it a bit (you can raise the E side too to even out the response). I love the new '08 Fenders too, but between the two I liked the neck and tone of the '57 more.

That's part of it. The finish is also a little pricier. And the case they ship in is also Fender's tweed which runs about $80 more than the plastic standard case, so that's part of it too.

yes I agree.. PREFERENCE..but not 400 dollar difference preference.. if they were the same price..fair enough..but they're not
and for no reason whatsoever..

and about the yamaha thing.. yeah.. you may have a point.. but a yamaha doesn't sound like a fender

For some bassists Yamahas sound better than a Fender, it's just a matter of preferences. And about price - there is a good post above about that :) And "vintage" basses are always more expensive - try to buy Fender from 70's or 60's - they might not be better than '08, but they will cost much more

yes the finish is pricier and the case is more expensive.. but why is the case more expenisve?..it isn't as good as the new one..but it's "vintage"..even though it's totally new.. I really think it's just a total money making thing...atleast when fender do some sig models..there is actually a clear difference..with this it's just like they're trying to get as much as they can for something that isn't different

and as regards to 70s and 60s basses going for more..thats because they are actually old, they are vintage... not reissues and they are collectable..totally different

I think the bottom line is Fender sells them for that much more because they can. I bought my '57 AV in 2007 for $1,385. In 2008 the price went up to $1,500. I don't know what the official reason is for the $115 hike, but with the volume of basses Fender sells I don't know how strong their argument for it would be.

Some price difference is warranted just because the AV reissues have better fit and finish over the standard '08 models, but how much difference is probably market driven in large part.

My '59 Custom Shop has the best fit and finish of any Precision I've ever played (best tone wood too), but is that worth yet another $1,000 over the AV reissue? I guess that depends on how much stuff like that matters to you, and of course how much dough you have to spend on a bass.
