This thread's been going on for quite a while, and since it started, I discovered a whole new prog lineage: Ange. These guys depend a lot on twisted and very clever lyrics in French, so they never got much recognition outside of the French speaking world, but researching early French prog on the interwebs, I came across them as having been hugely influential in their day - and found out that my King-Crimson-hating French wife even saw them once.

What? No Meshuggah?

Fly From Here was the exception, that was pretty good. But Heaven and Earth almost made Big Generator seem good by comparison.

I think Heaven and Earth was their worst album. By far. I actually like Big Generator to some degree. Though admittedly, it is not on my play list.

I'm in the no Squire / no Wakeman / no Yes camp (except Relayer).

One a side note, Olias Of Sunhillow, which I always liked and thought was a great album, couldn't get why Song Of Seven was so bad.
The Story Behind Jon Anderson's debut solo album Olias Of Sunhillow | Louder
I think they've made certain incarnations work... Drama was great, and so was Fly From Here, and I think Moraz was the best of all of them, IMO. As much as I miss Squire, it's not like he's played an interesting bass line in years. Sherwood sounds like an imitation, and he also seems to be stuck in the 90's, sonically, too. But Jon Davidson sounds like a much weaker version of Anderson, his voice lacks any power, he always sounds like he's on the verge of crying.

They just lost the spark a long time ago... the 80's ruined them, and they never really recovered, artistically. Now they're just an incredibly half-assed tribute act.

Heaven and Earth was a steaming pile of hot garbage, melodically, rhythmically and sonically. The melodies sounded like children's songs at times, and Davison's lyrics sounded like bad imitations of Anderson's post-Tormato cheesiness, like a 16 year old girl writing about love and crystals.

Arditti Quartet:

(admittedly this would have been a funnier post if I could find Arditti's rendition of Elliott Carter's String Quartet #2, but apparently that's not on youtube.

...and yeah, Arditti ain't "prog-rock" so this is all meant for levity.)

Levity it is indeed. Good stuff though. Lots of cool phrasing. Thanks for the link.
