I would like to add something different here:
How about Darryl Jones and Charlie Watts?
I think DJ makes the Stones sound good live because he's reacting real good with the "timing" of Charlie.

Umphreys Mcgee's Rhythm section is beyond comparison. Every time i see them live they are even better.
Hardly a nod to Bruce/Baker...sad day :scowl:

The Smiths had a great rhythm section. People always underrated the contributions of Mike Joyce and especially Andy Rourke, who had a very distinctive bass style.
Les Pattison and David de Freitas (I think that was his name) of Echo and the Bunnymen were also good. The Stone Roses, with Mani and Reni, were very cool.

I like the above combos a lot - even if they never reached the same level of status as Zeppelin, Rush etc. All are great at locking in and making the overall sound better without getting in the way or playing all over each other.
agreed, but I would add McNeilly/Sims of Jesus Lizard to that list.
I'm not a big fan of the Dave Matthews Band but Stefan Lessard and Carter Beauford are SO tight.

Um, don't know if they count as rock, but I would say Martin Mendez and Martin Lopez from Opeth.
