best rock singer?

maybe this should be a poll...

singer and great example...

Paul Rogers, example..."gone,gone,gone"

Paul Rogers is always a good shout for Best Rock Singer. He's a natural, never seems to be trying too hard, and is a versatile musician. Add his presence and you have the full package. Off the top of my head, I don't see anyone who tops him. That would have been my first pick if I hadn't seen your post. And I'm not saying he's better than any of the other top singers, but he "ticks off all the boxes".

Although very subjective, I am picking the people that made me stop and go wow - these people can really sing when I first heard them:

Pat Benatar - to me the quintessential rock singer (rockers, ballads, etc. - and that range)

Ann Wilson - a close number 2

Rob Halford (particularly on Sad Wings of Destiny)

Geoff Tate (Operation Mindcrime and Empire were just excellent)

Roger Daltrey (Who's Next)

Ronnie James Dio (such a unique voice - Holy Diver album by far my favorite)

So many other great singers on this thread also.

My vote is for Gary Cherone :D

Completely agree. One of the high points of the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert was the medley Extreme did. Cherone was in full effect. It was basically just covers but done so well and with such care and reverence. His voice really stood up to those classic songs by probably the absolute best front man in the history of rock.

I don't know that it's possible to say that a singer is objectively better than others, though I have to say that Rob Halford's vocal range always impresses me. Hi ability to sing fast, aggressive like Painkiller as well as softer ballads like Before the Dawn is outstanding as well.
This is his best performance, in my opinion:

Judas Priest: Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver
