I love the round wounds on got on my guitar but i have no idea what brand they are or the thickness because they came with the bass at the pawn shop i bought it from. what are the best round wounds on the market today?

I have also heard great things about DR strings but have yet to try them.

This is entirely a matter of personal preference.

DR, Dunlop, SIT, D'Addario, Ernie Ball, GHS, D'Aquisto, Ken Smith, Lakland, Sadowsky, Elixer, Fender, LaBella, Dean Markley. All of those are good.
GHS boomers, Rotosound 66, Ernie Ball slinky, as my fave 3. Its rather silly though to think there would be a best roundwound string, or a best flatwound. Each brand has a tonal char unique to them. Its strictly a matter of personal sound preferance for a given bass or guitar.
I don't know if it's just my ears...or maybe something about my body chemistry, but I use exclusively GHS Boomers, NOT because I love their sound right out of the box, but because after they die, they come back and are amazing. I have to play through about 1 week of dead string sound, and then they have this rebirth. I leave them on for a long time, and have gone through as many as 3-4 death/rebirths on a set of strings.
I don't know if anyone else here has had anything like that.

SS - D'Add Prosteels; super bright, low tension, easy on the fingers, and easy on the wallet.
Nickel - SIT Powerwounds / Elixir Nano's; both really nice sounding strings being warm, and bright.

Uh.. the ones I just yanked off my latest bass - and replaced with LaBella DTFs? 
Seriously though, it's whatever brand/gauge/material makes you happy - of course. In my case, it's usually Hybrid Slinkys, unless I want a particular sound from one of my basses. Then; it just depends..

I used D'Addario XL nickels almost exclusively since 1979.
Now with 3 basses I can experiment a bit
Hartke - $10 a set, crap,horrible rough feel to them,sounded tinny and clanky
Elixir Nanoweb Nickels - $70 a set,but they lasted 6 months and would have lasted much longer but I wanted a change. Not as much low end as D'Adds but they sounded the same from day 1 to day 180
Ernie Ball Power Slinkys 55-110 - great sounding strings, especially suited to drop tuning.
But I still like D'Addario Nickel Rounds the best
Now with 3 basses I can experiment a bit

Not much more to know...I guess give it a try if you haven't. I think I'm just one of those people who likes worn rounds.
D'Addario 45-100 EXL170's are what I am using on my Jazz & Precision Basses. Bass Strings Online 2 set for $22.00. (that's $11.00 per set in twin pack)
