I have a set of Dimarzio Split P pups and they are hot, aggressive and dead quiet.

I originally had them in an older MIJ BC Rich Warlock and used to get comments about the sound from sound guys, even direct through a DI. Something about that combination worked.

I got rid of the Warlock (couldn't stand the neck dive) and now have them in a Frankenfender P with a maple jazz neck.

Also, you can get them in white which may look really cool in certain basses. Like these

I love the SD hots - the SPB-2 and SJB-2's. The STK-2's are also great pickups. The quarter pounders are the best way to KILL your tone - totally scooped and boomy - nice big hole where all the tone is. Probably the worst pickups they make.

1st problem is your asking a question that is very diverse.
Each pickup is actually quite good in its own right, BUT each one also has a tone of its own and works with different neck and body woods. I use a SPB-1 with my ash body and rosewood neck and it sounds great. But with the SPB-3 it's way too boomy. I then put the SPB-3 in my maple neck , alder body and wow nice sounds.....so it just depends on what you use and your taste in music. Just my 2 cents.
I also put the SPB-3 i my PJ bass with a STK-j2b and the sounds together were punchy and smooth and worked well together.
The SPB-2 is middle of the road and not to aggressive and you need to tweek your eq for the tone you want of course.

Seymour Duncan SPB-3's. They have a lot of bite! Pretty well priced too.
Dimarzio apparently make a few good P-pickups to cater for heavier genres of music. I came across this review on youtube of a pre-wired Dimarzio pickup/pickguard set. Check it out.
