Hi bassbrothers !
I.m playing in a metal band and i need a punchy present tone . And i was thinking at a 5 stringed spector. What would you recommend ?
P.S : i heard something about lakland 55-01
What would you choose and why ?

Euro for 7-800? Most I see go for 8-900. They're worth farm more than that, IMO...given that they retail new for close to $3000, their used value is nowhere near what it should be.

Well, the Rebop is still a Euro, just that it's a bolt-on instead of neck-through and it has passive EMGs instead of active. And I've seen them used in the past year from $600 to $800 and occasionally an older one will show up for around $500.

I agree they're worth far more, same with the Rebops that currently retail for $1500 - $1600. The Euros (both Euro and Rebop) are some of the best deals around. Sucks for sellers though, buyers see a few go for the bottom end and expect them all at that price which leads to really nice basses staying up for sale for weeks until sellers get desperate.

Spector euro.

If you were in Australia you would have to add a 2 in front of the 7 to even get near the right price for a Euro.

I play a Legend Custom 4 in my metal bands. The Legend 5 would be a perfect instrument for you, but if you could still find a Custom 5 that would be better. I really like mine and it's the ideal tool for the job, but they're hard to find because they were unpopular and thus got discontinued.

I find the Rebops to be a poor product and badly suited to almost anything other than slappy funk. I also hate the feel, fit and finish and I couldn't recommend one. Others love them as much as I hate them though (and would probably tell you that the Legends are not worth the wood they're made of) so this is a purely personal perspective.

I own both a Euro 5 and a ReBop 5 and I love them both. They definitely are different animals though. The Euro is a bigger, heavier bass with a ton of tone and versatility. The ReBop is smaller and lighter and a bit more aggressive in tone. I can't really say I like one more then the other, they both are amazing basses. ReBops tend to fall into your price range a bit more then Euros do, but you can always get lucky and find a steal. You can't go wrong either way.

Personally I'd buy this one - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f126/spector-ns-4crfm-94-95-black-cherry-burst-burst-1030667/ - and tune it BEAD.

The P/J setup has more punch and growl than a set of humbuckers, and unless you're doing a lot of tapping/sweeping silliness it's unlikely that you'll need the high G string in a metal band ;)

Not to mention that $765 with a case included is an absurd deal for a bass that retails for $2000 without a case :D

I'd assume that your last paragraph is based off of a single bad experience with a ReBop, as most of it is pretty out of left field.

I'm sorry that your experience with one was so unpleasant, as they are truly killer instruments; you may not personally care for the neck shape, but their fit and finish is usually excellent and undoubtedly a step above the Legend line, as are the pickups and electronics.

As far as them only being good for 'slappy funk', I think John Montagna: and a host of other rock and metal players would disagree ;)

you can also look for a legend custom 5 i hear they are awesome and i love my rebop..and MDbass is right you can get a NS2A as well and tune it BEAD and it will kill..my old NS2A is at GC in Richmond and it has Kor haz and 18 volt and would be killer for you..

As a Spector owner/player, when someone says Euro I don't think of the ReBop. The Euro is its own model, despite both the ReBop and Euro being built in the Czech Republic.

I personally play a ReBop. It still gives me the Spector tone, but without the added weight of the neckthru & maple construction.

I paid close to $800 for mine and felt it was a great deal. The incessant need by the market to drive the prices on these beauties down to below what a Performer/Legend sells for new baffles me. :( You don't see that with an MIA Fender. They don't get dropped to below what an MIM costs. It's a pity.

How the heck do you even slap on a ReBop5? The spacing is 16.5mm! I can't do it without hitting every other string. :S

I don't know if the used market in Europe for Euros is better or worse than the US, but IMO it's worth holding out for the Euro LX or a pre-LX. I haven't played any non-US made bass better than these, and they are much better built than the many US-built EBMM's, Carvins and Fenders I've been exposed to.

I have not played a Rebop or a Legend but many guys seem to be fine with them after minor upgrades to the preamp and pickups.

Speaking from someone who owns a Korean made Spector, the ns-94/5's, and ns-2k4/5's are real sleepers. Especially if you upgrade the pups and electronics in them, such as I have. I will post a link just so you can hear what it sounds like plugged straight into the mac with no effects.

Mind you, these were with a set of cobalts that are 6 months old.

+1. I have a NS-2000/4 w/upgrades and it is amazing! There's a NS-2000/5 in the classifieds right now...if only I had the $$..

Nice cover sumgruuvz!

Thank you. I think those basses are so underrated and such dark horses once they're upgraded. It's ok. Hope no one else finds out about them. I seen that ns2k5 in gf used for $400. Man is sell my Warwick in a heartbeat, but I don't have enough scratch to do that and upgrades. Maybe some other time :)
