"Best" Trace Elliot cabs

The best sounding Trace cab I ever saw was the 1084H, the 8x10"
It was in Birmingham (UK) at music live in late 2000. David Jacob had a V8, one of these cabs and beautiful 6 string, green Status bass. I'd love one myself but practicality goes out of the window. It would look so cool with my V4... If you look at my "previous owned list" you'll see I've owned most Trace cabs. Personally, I've found my Peavey cab to be best but out of the Trace Elliot boxes, the 1248H (4x12" + horn) was the best. Its different as well because its a sealed (infinite baffle) rather than the others that were all vented units....

Is that cab similar to the Peavey 4x12? Or was it designed for Trace by Peavey? Also, I am attracted to the idea of a sealed 4x12, but it sounds like it is quite the big and bulky cab.

My 4052H just came in today, and talk about mint condition! This thing looks brand spankin' new! :hyper:

It is on the heavy side, though. Not that I mind, just that it surprised me how heavy it is. I hope to use it at practice tonight with my V8 and an Ampeg SVT 8x10 (which is not mine).

Thats awesome!! I've never seen one of those in the "wild."

Its funny, Like others have mentioned, I'm a big-time Trace enthusiast...but I was never crazy about their cabs for some reason.

However, last night at practice I played through an 12band (280w i think), running a TE 410 (not sure of the model- it was all black w/black tolex, 2 ports, Tweeter, Trace logo plate in upper left, and black metal grill) and a SWR 18. I was very impressed with the 410. Anyone know what cab that is?? Such clean, warm punch...Wow. I left there with seriously fiending for one...I'm gonna have to get one now.

Cool score on that brite box. I've owned a bunch of TE gear: combos, heads and cabs etc. When I had my brand new AH300 and 410 cab in 1991 I really, really GASSED for the 15 and brite box to match but I was young and poor! The two most interesting pieces I had I owned up until a few years ago. Forgive me for not knowing model numbers but I had a 2x10 with no horn and one of the 2x10s with the 2x5s in it. Both pre-Gibson. Cool cabs. I'm glad to hear that PV has resurrected the TE stuff. At least they will give an honest attempt at it.

They were great cabs from what I remember. The 210 with no horn had the two round ports and I think the other one was sealed. It wasn't the same depth as the other one that's for sure. Sold em both and bought GS112s which I sold a year later. Sigh.....

Which one did you prefer? I presume the one with the ports went deeper, and the one with the two 5's had more high end.

I have found a non-ported 1048 (no horn) in really good shape. It does have the red stripes. I'm intrigued, but I think that it might need a 15 or an 18 under it to get some real lows. Of course, I could use the Bright Box for highs.

Any thoughts what something like this might be worth?

Tom, I don't know how practical this is in terms of stability, but the 4x5" will exhibit far superior dispersion and projection if stood on its end.

Two things have always put me off the Trace cabs: They weigh a ton due to being made of MDF; and the 4x10" I used for some band practices, although it sounded round, punchy, warm and probably perfect for many players, only seemed to do that one tone. This is speaking as an Acme addict, who expects his cabs to do everything from deep dub, growly funk and roaring rock, with merely the tweak of onboard EQ, change of technique or stomp of pedal.

But that 'one' sound the Trace made, it was a good one.

You - and others who have voiced similar opinions here - may be onto something. Maybe I'll just stick to Trace amps (and the fun little Bright Box!), and look elsewhere for cabs...

I had the TE210 and a bright box and it was killer!! I used it with a hartke 115. The TE210 was a great cab alone and I used it with my demeter/mackie rig for years and everybody was happy with the sound. Nice and growly... Tweeter could get out of hand if turned too high but the TE cab is one of those "sleeper" pieces that no one remembers. Their combos, especially, the 115 and 210 were so great, that few people remember they made cabs...

Well, I've owned a 1048H for a few years, and I have to say it really lacked power and lows so be used as a single cabinet. That is, when playing loud on concerts/rehearsals. I have my low B tuned to A and it couldn't handle it at all a large volumes.

However, combined with a 15" or 18" it is a nice rig. But personally I don't think it's much better then what the competition has to offer, while Trace is (at least here in the Netherlands) fairly expensive.

I always liked their 4 x 12". They can handle the lows better and sounds pretty warm. Maybe a nice combo with that 4x 5"?

I had a few bits 'n' pieces of Trace gear over the years!

Started with a Series V head - the AH250. bought a brand new 1048 cab (the sealed 4 x 10 without horn). This combo worked well, but I doubt it would have given me a lot of headroom for gigging. Also, when I started playing with 5 stringers, the B string sounded quite muddy!

I added the 1518 cab (1 x 15) and bingo, plenty more volume and the B string sounded great!

Next move, I traded the AH250 and 4 x 10, against a brand new AH500 and 1048H (ported 4 x 10 with horn). This also sounded great and had loads of power.

Unfortunately, there is a price to pay for good looks and power - Trace cabs were quite bulky. My back wasn't happy and after a while I decided to downsize. Traded the lot fo an Ashdown ABM500 with Mini48 and Mini15 cabs. My back and chirpractor are happy now.....

As to my favourite Trace cab, well, I guess I always had GAS for the AH1000 and the BFC cab that went with it!!!!! The BFC was the 4 x 10 with 2 horns (one per side wired to effectively a 2 x 10) and a 15" in the bottom. Couple that with the AH1000 and there were a lot of options!

Mind you, these days, I'm happy with the Ashdown stuff - and you could argue that is it an evolution of the Trace Elliot gear!


Congrats on acquiring your V8 and the 4052!!!
