I figured that in metal there are no notes, just distortion, so tuning is not necessary.

Nissan makes a nice tuner, from japan and "all metal".....die-cast even!
Best tuner for metal is the one that can do DEAD tuning. \m/ 
It should be obvious. The best tuner for metal is the one that will let you tune down two whole steps in half step increments. Pretty sure it can be found for around tree fiddy.

In seriousness though, some tuners don’t track well down in the 0 octave 
plenty of cats tuning down there these days. Personally I don’t like how floppy “normal” gauge strings get down there, and I don’t like the timbre of the “bridge cable” gauge strings you need to have good tension down there. I’d rather tune up.

The Korg Toneworks DTR-2 rackmount tuner is very good and ambidextrous to use. You can stand on the right side or left side of it and read it very well and plug into the front or back... 
Oh and it has a metal front and back plate too...

How do you tune something that keeps breaking down?
If you use Left Handed Bass Strings on a Right Handed Bass, the e string is tuned to schwa
easy, just make sure all the tuner heads are lined up and flat, parallel to the neck. Give em a tug, and if one is looser than the other, tighten it up so they are all about the same tension

Funny, went to a metal show and the 2nd opener poked fun at themselves. Before they started a song they said "here's another 3 minute breakdown for ya".
I don't know if I'd like their album, but for live music, it kept the heads bobbing.
