Best tuner pedal? (2025)

I've got three different tuners I use depending on context.

1. Polytune Mini 2

2. Korg Pitch Black rack mounted tuner

Yes, it's completely rubbish on bass.

The Korg Pitchblack Mini is a fantastic tuner. Great display, simple to use, accurate tuning, reasonable price, small footprint. 10/10.

I bought the cheapest tuner I found about10 years ago; I thought it was cheap even back then being young and broke. It was accurate and functional enough for me and is still working, so I never bothered to upgrade it. For setups I always used a pocket Korg tuner; I had one for about 15 years and last year I finally had to replace it because the plastic enclosure was falling apart.

I'm somewhat skeptic with precision tuning though. I get the theory behind the Petersons and those micro calibrations, but I can't see how that impacts real life in an instrument with frets, mechanical tuners, a flexible neck and strings that change pitch unconsistently with how hard you press and pluck them... not to mention my ears are good but in no way near as good as to tell wether a tuning is plain or sweetened. YYMV but it doesn't make much sense to me to obsess over it.

Since you asked for the best - another vote for Turbo Tuner ST300.
I also liked Boss TU3 Waza but the blue/green led combo is not to everyone’s liking.

I used the Peterson Strobostomp for years but recently switched to the Walrus Canvas Tuner and it is KILLER. Can be positioned vertical or Horizontal (display shifts) and has some great features to make it insanely easy to read on stage.

There's not a wrong answer here - I've never had a "bad: pedal tuner; Boss, Korg, and probably a few others I've tried.

But my tuner of choice is the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner mini;
very accurate strobe tuner. I prefer the display over what I can remember from the Peterson.

The LED screen is off until I engage the tuner to tune. While engaged, the signal is muted.

One of the features I like is that it's configurable. You can have it muted when you're tuning (LED display off when not tuning), or the signal can pass through whether it's on or off.

I’m still quite happy with my Polytune 2 Noir. Got to be 10 years old now. I’ve noticed that little bit of tone suck it has, though, and using a buffered pedal in front of it always gets rid of it. And since I always have a buffer in front, it’s not a problem for me.

I have a StroboStomp and a Boss TU-3.

Both are perfectly serviceable.

IME, the Peterson strobo HD is an excellent tool with many uses, however, I use it on the bench. For an on the floor pedal, the Sonic Research turbo is excellent, and does not impact the tone. Can't go wrong with either. I bought both of them used in the TB classifieds after reading positive reviews, and saved quite a bit.

I didn't realize that the Sonic Research tuner didn't have a visual indicator for when it is muted.

That is really too bad. I was going to get one too. It looks great but it could be made of platinum meteorite dust but I won't use it if I can't see that it's off or on at a glance. Between playing, singing, vamping w the audience I am not going to muck about with the critical mute

It depends on how you configure it. Both the Peterson and Sonic Research are like this.

Config 1 (typical mode). Tuner display is only on when the pedal is mute. Click to unmute and the tuner display goes off.

Config 2 (my preferred). Turner display is always on. Foot switch toggles mute on and off.

If you configure it for the 2nd option, then the lack of any mute/unmute indicator on the Sonic Research becomes a factor.

Also note the Peterson display is bigger but if you're off-angle it fades out. The Sonic Research display can be read very well from many angles.

FWIW - I had a question about my Turbo Tuner ST300 some time ago and called Sonic Research tech support on a SUNDAY and expected to just leave a message and get a response during normal business hours.

The owner answered the phone on Sunday and we spent about 15 minutes going into depth about my question. That's customer service.

I got a good price on a used Boss Waza and it works great, and looks dope as hell.

I just take my bass in every Jan 1st or so (aka Tuning Day). I simply pay an expert to tune my bass and it's good for the year.

Another vote for the Sonic Research stuff. Just a great tuner. I have a new Peterson clip on and had an older polytune. The polytune seems better than the Peterson. I'll get a unitune next to replace the polytune I gave to a friend. Wouldn't mind trying a Peterson pedal next to the Sonic stuff, but the Sonic Research stuff to me is the best so far.
