Don't feel like checking if anyone has stated this guy yet but Toby Leaman of Dr Dog. Lays down some very nice bouncy grooves and is a hell of a singer too.

He's got lead vocals on these two.

Like I've already stated, it does have exceptions. I 'know of' the bassist for Brendan Benson but I (nor anyone else it would seem) has any idea what his name is, what he looks like, or if he is affiliated with any other acts.

The bassist for the now disbanded Rufio has some sweet chops for a pop punk bassist. The intro to Still is one of my favorite basslines ever.

I've got two more.
In the band (that I'm sure none of you know) The Halo Benders, there is the bassist named Wayne Flower. He is rediculously melodic and does many duels with the guitarist during solos to add layers to the music.
Also, the band's frontman, Guitar-virtuoso Doug Martsch (Built to Spill... You know, the guys who inspired Modest Mouse) does alot of doubling on bass during the recording and does a reeeeeealy good job. Kudos to a guitarist understanding that basses too can be just as musical as a guitar.

Oh, and Nick Lowe. Great musician and a surprisingly good bassist. (Listen to song Nutted to Reality)

I just registered only to say that for a bass player that is one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen here.

Matt Freeman is great but saying Jaco and Les are overrated compared to him is just plain moronic. They are FAR better players than Matt. Maybe that's why they're overrated because they're better than him and more original than him. Why don't you actually make yourself a better bass player and listen to their music instead of drowning your ears in punk, Nick.

Ralphe Armstrong. Even though he is pretty famous among us jazz fusion bass players, he doesn't get a lot of praise outside of the bass community. He is the reason the fretless bass became possible.
