Best Warwick for Metal?

The more expensive Corvettes are German made, and the price would vary according to options ($$ Doublebuck, etc.). Other Corvettes may either bear the name Warwick or Rockbass, and are manufactured in asian countries resulting in lower wage costs. These are most likely the Corvettes which you're probably seeing at low prices.

This is not necessarily true. My 2003 Warwick Corvette is made in Germany, and I bought it used for $500, which is significantly less than you would pay for a $$. A used German Corvette's price is often closer to used Rockbass prices than, say, used $$ or Thumb prices.

(The newer Corvettes are made in Korea, not Germany (I think they switched to Korea in 2010)).

I have a 97' Corvette Standard (Bubinga body, wenge neck and FB, brass frets and nut, pretty sure pre-cnc) and it growls like crazy. It's a punch machine as well, cuts through with authority in any setting yet mixes well among the soundscape.

EDIT: It's Passive.

I was thinking the Thumb was where it's at... Whats up with the Corvette model? I see them going for significantly less than Thumbs, and I can't figure out why.

BTW, this is definitely gonna be a 4 string, used, and probably bolt-on. I have some nice trade baits, but nothing that would stand up against an NT.

Oh and Franken, I always thought Ryan was an Ampeg endorser? Could have changed of course.

Thanks for the early responses guys, keep em coming!

I believe he switched from Ampeg to Warwick after The New Game

I have a german corvette 5 and I really struggle to see why there is such a big price difference between that and the thumb, they seem like pretty much the same thing but with different pickup placement.

it's my only bass and it does juuust fine

I have a Thumb BO and a Corvette, both made in Germany from the late 90s, and the Thumb is definitely a better built instrument. The neck feels much better, it has a contoured body, stays in tune longer, and the electronics were completely different prior to their upgrades - actives on the Thumb and passive on the Vette. Don't get me wrong - they're both incredibly well built instruments, but the Thumb's higher price tag is definitely justified.

I really can't say enough great things about the German Corvette Double$$ for metal. I obtained one from a fellow TBer a few weeks ago, and it has been fantastic in my metal band. I love the the punch and clarity I can get with it, even while doing fast finger style lines. The electronic options are also a great feature. You can have each pup as series, parallel, or single, which allows an wealth of great tonal options. I have seen them typically going for around $800 in the classifieds, which is a bargain for a bass of this quality.
Be warned though that if you try a new Warwick in a store it will most likely have the newer thinner jazz like neck that they now use. Most used ones you will find on here have the older thicker neck, so keep that in mind.

Are MECs blade style pickups? I ask because of the way they slant the double J in some thumb models. Do they use a wider spacing? A 5 string pickup? I want to conduct an 'experiment' on a jazz bass body, but I want to get the dimensions right.

i have an nt thumb 6 and it sounds like this in a metal situation:
CAUTERIZE THE EARTH: FRONTIER JUSTICE - YouTube
thats run direct. to me ryans tone on l.d 50 is the best bass tone ever and is the main reason i spent $$$$.$$ on the thumb. my bass has basslines pups in it and i dont particularly care for them. im thinking of swapping for delano sb6s or gutting the entire thing, getting custom nordy big singles and putting an audere 4 band pre. but as is its the best bass ive ever played/owned. i catch my self staring at her sometimes. another wick i would suggest for gnarly growl is the corvette $$ nt 5.

That is AWESOME tone! I love how it's grunty down low and takes on almost an entirely different character as you move up the neck. What strings were you using?
