Best Way Huge Pickle?

The Pork & Pickle is the best in my opinion. With the tone shaping on the blend you can dial in your standard muff sounds and eq the blend for definition, or dial in a thin garage rasp and eq the blend for bottom only. And THEN you get a really good overdrive too. It’s a genius pedal that doesn’t get much love around these parts for some reason.

It's a fantastic pedal and works well in between my compressor and preamp.

That's all I need as far as pedals for "drive" on my signal chain.

And then add in the gain and voicing sections of my D-800+ head and it's pure perfection.

I've never found a bass overdrive, distortion, fuzz kind of thing that I have liked until now. It's taken years to get the right combination of stuff, but I think I finally nailed it with these 3 pedals.

Brand new forum member. I searched for previous threads - hopefully, I'm not asking something that's been addressed countless times before.

Looking to buy my first bass fuzz pedal. I've decided I want one of the Way Huge Pickle offerings, but wondering which one is the the best version. I've seen great reviews for the Russian Pickle, the Swollen Pickle MkIIS and MkIII versions. Ultimately, does it matter? Is there one version past or present that stands above the rest?

If you can find a dirty donny edition, grab it. That was my fav. I sold mine idiotically.

The Russian pickle would be a second choice. Or the regular swollen pickle. It doesn't matter that much between the swollen versions. I think I've had 3 different ones. Including the dirty donny.

I have the Swollen Pickle MkIIS and it took me a few years to finally fiddle with the internal knobs and watch a YouTube video, but now I love it. The default internal knob settings are probably better for guitar, especially the Voice control — it should be set all the way clockwise. The pedal has too much headroom and I have to keep the volume and sustain knobs near the minimum to keep unity gain. I do think it's my favorite Muff variant, but the Pork and Pickle is probably easier to use.

Thanks all, it seems like my first purchase in the fuzz pedal world will be the Pork and Pickle. I was leaning toward the Russian Pickle as it was. Knowing the P&P is built on the Russian Pickle + OD make it a no brainer. Really appreciate all the input and feedback. What a great community!!!

A couple things to keep in mind about this pedal:

The volume knob is sensitive, I don't usually take it above 9:00 or so on the dial.

You can adjust a few parameters via internal trim pots - if for instance you find that the output level changes too much when you switch modes, you can tweak those individually. The manual shows where they are and what they do. You will need to open the pedal up to access them, but that's not hard. I think most people are happy with the stock settings and never touch these, but it is an option if you want it.

Here is the manual for the compact "smalls" edition, which is what I've got. The larger pedal is all the same stuff, just in a bigger enclosure.

I have the Pork & Pickle which is their fuzz and overdrive in one pedal. Have had it for about a month now. Have been so happy with the overdrive sound I'm getting from it combined with my compressor & 2 tube preamp pedals, along with the gain & voicing sections of my amp (Mesa D-800+), that I haven't flipped the OD/Fuzz switch on it to fuzz yet.

Finally got my pork and pickle. This thing is awesome! Can't play it without a huge smile on my face. Just what I was looking for. Thanks so much for the recommendation. Big pork and pickle endorsement for anyone out there looking for a killer fuzzy/dirty pedal.

As mentioned by @gregmon79 the Dirty Donnie Edition is the best IMHO as well. I have one and it has a VAST amount of control for tons of sounds.

Russian: lower gain, more dynamic lows, less mid scoop = better for bass guitar

Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh (or Son of Pharaoh, same stuff in a smaller enclosure) sounds great on bass. It's a modified Big Muff but it has a switch for low/high gain, another to choose silicon or germanium diodes, and a knob that adds high end back in when the tone knob is turned down, which means you don't have to choose between "articulate but lacking low end" or "blanket over speaker cab."

My only gripe with it is that the green power indicator LED is painfully bright, so I had to put a dampener jewel cover on it.
