Which one would you choose between an 83 i believe FENDER PRECISION SPECIAL (both passive & active with the tweed case) and a Vintage Precision Bass '57 (made in 88) with dimarzio pickups (not sure if stock, probably not i suppose). I kinda lean on the special cause its stock, while the other has the dimarzio pickups and is refretted (fishy?). These both are in the same price range :) Too bad there are not more european ads here on tb and i have to rely on local!

I would think it depends on the tone you are looking for. The P special will be different than the 57' RI with the active pups and J pup added. The 57' should sound more vintage. Play both and see how they feel and what tone works for you. If the re-fret is good and the pups are done right its not an issue. You could change out the pups if you want.

The early P specials didn't come stock with the Jazz PU added. They didn't start doing that until the 90's IIRC

'57 RI

i dont care for active pbasses personally, but thats a preference.
i think some of the purest bass sounds come from a passive pbass.
string it with some flats and youll be set.

like me though, im sure someone can spare .02

You have a tough choice between the two-if the Dimarzio bass has a nice fret job. :D

Or, you could continue looking if you're not absolutely sure.
There's lots of nice basses for sale now, or will be soon...

Check the TB classifieds!

I would've thought the 57 RI at first too, but weren't the late 80's Reissues not as "great" as the earlier models (82, etc?)

I usually don't lump "bad" or "good" Fenders by era, as they're all different, but I wouldn't buy a MIA RI from the late 80's. Especially w/out the original parts.

Both late 80's MIA reissues I played have had bowed necks, heavy weight, weak PU's etc...but I guess that was only 2.
