BFM Omni 10 vs anything else?

bill's designs are not as hard as they might seem for you novice wood workers. the plans are really well thought out, and pretty easy to follow. just read them about ten times before you cut anything. the dr series is a bit more compex than the omni's or titans/tubas, but if you don't rush it you can do a good build from scratch with minimal tools. just be neat and methodical. put the extra effort to make every step as close to perfect as possible. don't think that you'll fix it later, make it right the first time and you'll end up with a high quallity product in the end. by comparison plans from electrovoice are much more vague, even though they are a comparitively simple design.

The Omni's, especially the 10 and 12's are a pretty easy build as far as woodworking goes - Bill's instructions are very good and his suggestions about ways to cope with cutting the needed angles using a circular saw guide are excellent. I found that only about 1/2 the time I sepnt on my Omni 10.5 pair was woodworking though - finishing the sutfaces, mounting the hardware and wiring take more time than you would think - all told I spent ~28 hours building mine.

I figure if the BFD plans are intended for do-it-yourselfers.. then it might be nice to have more information available for those who have never done wood sawing before.

Remember that some of us have never done that kind of thing before. It's intimidating to put your fingers anywhere near a running saw blade.

Also, it's a bit different to build a bass cabinet from building a table, a dresser, or something else with a saw. I don't think it's too much to ask the BFD gang for some sort of a woodworking primer on the BFD website.

All newbie questions are answered on Bill's site. The plans themselves are very detailed for the newbie builder.

The typical problem I see with newbs, is trying to second guess the plans. Read plans. Understand words. Follow direction. It is that simple, and works well. Use the recommended driver, wood, crossover parts, etc.

If in doubt, buy genuine baltic birch plywood. It is heavier than the light stuff and the light junk. You can't go wrong with BB other than a bit more weight.

*taps foot, checks watch, realizes that the middle of next week has come and gone*

;)

Huh? you posted this Monday night (in my and Tom's time zone, at least). How is that past the middle of the week???

Although, any prodding that will pester Tom into posting some info on this cab is welcome ... ;)

Cheers

I did a huge test session over last weekend, and will post results after my house guests depart. I did an Avatar 410 Neo, two Omni 10.5 (single driver), and a bunch of other BFM boxes.

The Omni 10.5 (1x10) has a 100 SPL peak around 360 Hz and 780 Hz, and a linear rolloff below 350 Hz. 75 SPL at 40 Hz, 68 at 30 Hz.

The Avatar 410 Neo was surprisingly dead flat 70 ~ 1200 Hz at 95 SPL, 5.6v/2m. -10dB at 40 Hz, -20dB at 30 Hz.

Well, how does the 10.5 sound with respect to the Avatar 4x10. Also, how is the low frequency roll off if using (2) 10.5's, rather than one, or is there no difference?

Lastly, how well would a Omni 10.5, or pair of 10.5's, supplement a typical vented box 1x15?

John.

I posted this two or three weeks ago. Tom's middle of last week happened a week or two ago. *checks calender again in antici..........pation*

Sorry dude, your sense of time is off -- look at the date on Tom's post: November 2nd. That was at the end of last week when he said it would have to wait until the "middle of next week". Therefore, he was referring to the middle of this week as when he'd be able to get around to testing it.

Hmmm, can't see date stamps, I only know an approx time I started the thread. Could be my bad but I can still try to poke him a bit. ;)

Edit: D'oh, there it is! Ok, I'm a dork. Nothin' to see here, move along.

Again, I apologize for the delays, guys. I actually have a couple of new toys that came in which I have not had time to play with yet.

On the plus side, I've been burning the midnight, working hard and trying to maintain the income necessary to get all of these toys in the first place! :p
