I am stuck between an Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV Pro, Epiphone Tobias Toby Deluxe IV or a Peavey Zodiac BXP. Which bass would be best for a starter that's wanting to play many genres and styles including very heavy stuff?

BIG BASS DECISION

Personally, I'd go with the Zodiac. They're quite nice! I kick myself for NOT having bought the one that was for sale locally 2 years ago.
Other than that, I'd get the T-bird. The Toby series is a bit of a let down.

+1 on the Toby being a let down. I've tried 2 new ones and both were underwhelming. The TBird Classic is a great bass, but the shape isn't for everyone. They play and sound great (assuming a decent setup). I've not tried the Zodiac, but Peavey has been making some great basses for a long time now, so I wouldn't rule them out.
Orange makes great products, but I'm more of an amp + cab fan. If 1 breaks, you replace 1, not both.
I had an Orange 35B (not the newer Pix version) and was completely underwhelmed by it. It sounded sterile and couldn't handle a low B very well. I recently played a Peavey Max 115 (newer version) and it sounded pretty darn good for the $299 price tag. A buddy of mine and I also tried a new EBMM Sabre through an Acoustic at GC and it sounded surprisingly good. I don't remember the model though but I'm sure it was a 2x10 combo.
Never played an Orange amp for bass or guitar, but they sound great when others are playing them so I presume they're pretty good. I have one combo for practicing, all else is separate heads and cabs, and in one case I have a few pres and a power amp (which don't get any use since I scored my Boogies).

Get the Epi Thunderbird classic pro. I have a Orange Terror Bass 500 with two 1x15 cabs and it's a SVT slayer. I don't know about the combo amps but I am very pleased with my Orange gear.
The active t-bird pros are really flexible and pretty solid basses. I have a 5er and am always surprised at the different sounds I can get out of it.
Of the 3 basses you talked about, I would personally prefer the Zodiac.great neck ,tone and price. As far as the Orange amp ,I have not personally played one but have heard them ,and it was good. Good luck with your decision , and Welcome.

What's your price range and do you deff want to pick up something new? I'm not selling anything but if there was a used something that is a bass that new would be beyond your price range but a bass you'd like to purchase there is always that route.
