Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

MarkA for the win on great ear with multiple MAS cab experience. Thanks for the input. 3rdcurve who goes to the scene of the crime, and others to include regularly gigging Nostatic who came back to MAS after selling his first. I am looking forward to hearing Kesslari play his new combo, flex top plus 109 under as sub at a local festival I really enjoy. Some top notch acts do it for charity.

The MAS46 is listed on the website at 4ohm.
To run a MAS109 horizontal under a MAS46, would one need a 2 channel power amp (or something like the Genz Benz 12.2) to get a balanced sound?
I'm assuming you could use a crossover or run them both full range.
I don't guess anyone has tried this combination yet?

Give Mike a call. I have a 46 and don't actually know the ohms. I don't want to bother him cause he is busy. If I need to double it up I would first check the ohms with a simple electrical tester. plug in one end of a speaker cable into the cab, then touch the leads of the tester to the other end normally headed to the amp. Easier to do with 1/4 inch ends Or just have a 2 ohm capable amp like many tube amps.

I think that the 46 was available in 4 or 8 Ohms. Mine is 8 Ohms. I've tried running it atop the 110 sub (from the Flex) both full range and through the sub's internal crossover. Different responses each way.

I absolutely love the voicing of the MAS112 and that mid switch is an awesome little boost. It's not over the top but is a really effective "bump" in the mid range that is just addictive. I actually prefer the voicing of the MAS112 to the MAS46 and MAS110 sub that I tried for a few days.

As many have commented, the MAS112 has a little more "traditional bass cab" type voice. I have the Faital 1000w 4 ohm model with tweeter.
The 46/110 combo was very transparent, very hi-fi, and sounded excellent. I suspect the 46/110 combo would also be a little louder than the MAS112 but you'd have to have both setups at the "Stoopid Loud" volume level to distinguish the difference. Using my modern 5 string basses, my Glockenklang amp and the 46/110 combo, I "neutralized" or made my overall tone so transparent that it lacked that certain, hard to define "something". The form factor of the 46/110 combo was also an issue as well.

The MAS112 has a much easier form factor for me since I regularly haul my gear up and down stairs. The overall tone has all of the MWV benefits (clear, focused, precise, powerful, wide dispersion, low end extension, etc.) AND it has some of that traditional bass cab "grunt" that I was missing with the 46/110 set up. Could I have EQed some of it in and chased it down? Probably, but the MAS112 has it right out of the box, has the form factor I was after and has nearly all the volume of the 46/110 rig in one haul.

I'm still digging in to the overall performance of the MAS112 but just using the EQ "on/off" switch on my Glockenklang in conjunction with using the "mid flat or mid boost" switch on the MAS112, I have four distinct tones that are totally easy to set and switch on the fly.

All in all, this set up meets my tone quality, volume, flexibility, and portability goals better than anything I've played to date. I may check out a couple more amps in the near future but so far the MAS112 is a keeper.

Just my opinions based on a few days of ownership and playing so far.

Hmmm....

Can't argue or debate that thought.

However.

After using one for some time now it is on the gig card checklist should I leave the house.

There is not a head/cab pairing of mine that does not benefit from the IsoAcoustic support.

Usually turns out that the smaller, more intimate, settings benefit the most. Larger louder mixes tend to hit the Vortex and render what you are applying attenuation too, moot.

Please remember I sit on a drum throne when playing and prefer a MAS Vortex Massage in the lower back region vs. my calves and ankles.

image.jpg Though for most of my gigs my little pjb bass cub gets the call, it was nice to have the MA109 behind me yesterday for our Friday Art Walk gig @ Blue Note Brewing in Woodland. The Double Stand™ was an unmitigated success for me. It includes a Gibralter Stealth Side Rack and the MBrace guitar holder.

Its really an amazing speaker.

Not the same thing (no special vibration damping), but, if you're just looking for a way to elevate the cab, Mike showed me one of these (I believe this is the right model) with the 46, and it made a huge difference in clarity vs. having the cab on the floor. Tilt isn't the handiest thing for stacking cabs, but wouldn't be an issue using the 46 solo. $40 and you wouldn't have to look for a milk crate: On-Stage Stands RS7000 Tiltback Amp Stand

I believe that they make an adjustable-tilt version also.
